Summary: Driving in a new country can be daunting. These tips offer insight into what to expect when driving in Muscat.

1. Understanding the Driving Culture

Driving in Muscat can be a unique experience. The roads are generally in good condition, but the driving style can be aggressive and unpredictable. It's important to be alert and cautious at all times. Overtaking is common and drivers often use their horns to communicate. It's also common to see people driving at high speeds, especially on highways.

2. Car Recommendation

Most expats prefer to drive SUVs or 4x4 vehicles in Muscat due to the terrain and the driving conditions. These types of vehicles are also useful for weekend trips to the desert or the mountains. However, smaller cars are also suitable for city driving.

3. Parking Situation

Finding parking in Muscat can be challenging, especially in crowded areas like the city center or popular malls. However, most residential areas have ample parking. Parking is generally free in most areas, but some places like shopping malls or popular tourist spots may charge a small fee.

4. Driving with an International License

Foreigners can drive in Oman with an international driving license for a period of up to one year. After this period, you will need to obtain an Omani driving license.

5. Obtaining an Omani Driving License

To obtain an Omani driving license, you will need to pass a driving test. The test includes a theory part and a practical part. You will also need to provide certain documents such as your passport, residence card, and a medical certificate. It's recommended to take a few driving lessons to familiarize yourself with the driving rules and conditions in Oman.

6. Road Safety

Always wear your seatbelt and ensure all passengers are also buckled up. Using a mobile phone while driving is illegal and can result in hefty fines. Be aware of speed limits and adhere to them. Speeding is a common cause of accidents in Oman.

7. Be Prepared for Off-Road Driving

If you plan to explore outside of the city, be prepared for off-road driving. Many of the country's attractions are located off the beaten path. A 4x4 vehicle is recommended for these adventures. Always carry a spare tire, jack, and other necessary tools in case of a breakdown.
