Driving in Lake District

Summary: Driving in a new country can be daunting. These tips offer insight into what to expect when driving in Lake District.

1. Driving on the Left Side

As in the rest of the UK, you will be driving on the left side of the road in the Lake District. This can take some getting used to if you're from a country where driving is on the right. Practice in less busy areas before tackling busier roads or city driving.

2. Narrow and Winding Roads

The Lake District is known for its narrow, winding roads. Be prepared for this and take your time, especially on country lanes where visibility can be limited. Always be prepared for the unexpected, such as sheep on the road!

3. Suitable Car

A smaller car is often more suitable for the narrow roads in the Lake District. However, if you're planning on exploring more remote areas, a 4x4 could be beneficial, especially in winter. Always ensure your car is in good working order, as breakdown services can take a while to reach more remote areas.

4. Parking

Parking can be limited in popular tourist spots, especially during peak season. It's advisable to arrive early to secure a spot. Parking fees vary, but expect to pay around £5-£8 for a day's parking. Some accommodation providers offer free parking, so check this when booking.

5. International Driving License

Foreigners can drive in the UK with an international driving license for up to 12 months from the date they last entered the UK. After this, you will need to apply for a UK driving license.

6. Getting a UK Driving License

To get a UK driving license, you will need to pass a theory test and a practical driving test. You can book these through the official DVSA website. Some people choose to take driving lessons to get used to UK roads and driving laws before taking the test.

7. Be Prepared for All Weather Conditions

The weather in the Lake District can be unpredictable, so be prepared for all conditions. This includes having appropriate tyres for winter driving, and always keeping an umbrella in the car!

8. Be Respectful of the Environment

The Lake District is a beautiful and protected area. Always stick to designated roads and parking areas, and never leave litter. This helps to preserve the area for future generations.
