7 Tips for Living in Denver

By Betsy Burlingame

Summary: Advice for people moving to Denver or thinking about moving there.

This is a must read if you're moving to Denver or thinking about moving there.

Denver, Colorado, is a vibrant city nestled in the Rocky Mountains. It's a popular destination for expats and digital nomads due to its thriving economy, diverse culture, and stunning natural beauty. If you're considering making the Mile High City your new home, here are seven key tips to help you settle in and make the most of your Denver experience.

1. Understand the Cost of Living

Denver is a desirable place to live, and the cost of living reflects that. It's more expensive than the national average, particularly when it comes to housing. However, compared to other major cities like New York or San Francisco, it's still relatively affordable. Be prepared to budget accordingly, and consider living in more affordable neighborhoods like Athmar Park or Barnum.

2. Get to Know the Neighborhoods

Denver is made up of many unique neighborhoods, each with its own character and charm. Capitol Hill is known for its historic mansions and vibrant nightlife, while Cherry Creek is famous for its upscale shopping and dining. LoDo (Lower Downtown) is the city's oldest neighborhood and is home to many popular attractions like Coors Field and the Denver Art Museum. Spend some time exploring different areas to find the one that feels like home to you.

3. Embrace the Outdoor Lifestyle

Denverites love the outdoors, and it's easy to see why. The city is surrounded by stunning natural beauty, with the Rocky Mountains to the west and the High Plains to the east. Take advantage of the many hiking and biking trails in the area, or try your hand at skiing or snowboarding in the winter. Don't forget to visit the city's many parks, like Washington Park and City Park, which offer a variety of recreational activities.

4. Enjoy the Local Cuisine

Denver's food scene is diverse and delicious. From food trucks to fine dining, there's something for everyone. Be sure to try some local specialties like Colorado green chili or Rocky Mountain oysters. Some popular restaurants to check out include Root Down, known for its innovative organic cuisine, and The Buckhorn Exchange, Denver's oldest restaurant and a great place to try some local game.

5. Get Involved in the Community

One of the best ways to feel at home in a new city is to get involved in the community. Denver has a vibrant arts and culture scene, with many galleries, theaters, and music venues. There are also plenty of opportunities to volunteer and give back to the community. Research groups that align with your interests and get involved. It's a great way to meet new people and feel more connected to your new home.

6. Learn About the Local Culture

Denver has a rich history and a diverse culture. Take some time to learn about the city's past at the History Colorado Center or the Molly Brown House Museum. Attend local festivals and events to experience the city's vibrant music, art, and food scenes. And don't forget to check out the local craft beer scene – Denver is known as the "Napa Valley of Beer" and is home to more than 100 breweries.

7. Prepare for the Altitude

Denver is known as the Mile High City for a reason – it's exactly one mile above sea level. This high altitude can take some getting used to, especially if you're coming from sea level. You may experience symptoms like shortness of breath, fatigue, and dehydration. Drink plenty of water, take it easy for the first few days, and don't be surprised if your alcohol tolerance is lower than usual.

Living in Denver as an expat or digital nomad can be an exciting adventure. By understanding the cost of living, getting to know the neighborhoods, embracing the outdoor lifestyle, enjoying the local cuisine, getting involved in the community, learning about the local culture, and preparing for the altitude, you can make the most of your time in this beautiful city.
