Living in Amsterdam - 7 Tips for Living in Amsterdam

This is a must read if you're moving to Amsterdam or thinking about moving there.

Living in Amsterdam as an expat or digital nomad can be an exciting and enriching experience. The city is known for its artistic heritage, elaborate canal system, and narrow houses with gabled facades, legacies of the city’s 17th-century Golden Age. However, to make the most of your time in this vibrant city, there are a few key tips to keep in mind.

1. Learn the Language

While English is widely spoken in Amsterdam, learning Dutch can greatly enhance your experience. It not only helps in day-to-day interactions but also shows respect for the local culture. There are numerous language schools in the city offering Dutch courses for all levels. Plus, locals appreciate the effort and it can open doors to deeper cultural understanding and friendships.

2. Get a Bike

Amsterdam is known as one of the most bicycle-friendly cities in the world. With its flat landscape and dedicated bike lanes, cycling is often the quickest and most convenient way to get around. It's also a great way to immerse yourself in the local lifestyle. There are numerous bike rental shops throughout the city, or you can buy a second-hand bike for longer stays.

3. Explore the Neighborhoods

Amsterdam is made up of a variety of unique neighborhoods, each with its own charm. The Jordaan is known for its artistic vibe, charming streets, and indie boutiques. De Pijp, often referred to as the 'Latin Quarter', is a multicultural hotspot with a vibrant food and bar scene. Oud-West is a trendy neighborhood with a mix of shops, restaurants, and cultural institutions. Spend time exploring these and other neighborhoods to find your favorite.

4. Enjoy the Local Cuisine

Amsterdam offers a rich culinary scene. From traditional Dutch pancakes at The Pancake Bakery to Indonesian rijsttafel at Restaurant Blauw, there's something for every palate. Don't miss out on trying local delicacies like herring from a haringhandel or bitterballen at a local pub. For a fine dining experience, consider Restaurant De Kas, known for its farm-to-table approach.

5. Embrace the Culture

Amsterdam is home to a wealth of cultural attractions. Visit the Van Gogh Museum or the Rijksmuseum to appreciate Dutch art. Explore the Anne Frank House for a poignant look at the city's history. Or simply enjoy a leisurely stroll along the city's iconic canals. The city also hosts numerous festivals throughout the year, offering a great way to engage with the local community.

6. Understand the Cost of Living

Amsterdam is a beautiful city, but it's also one of the most expensive in Europe. Be prepared for high costs for housing, dining out, and entertainment. However, there are ways to live more affordably. Consider living in a less central neighborhood, cooking at home more often, and taking advantage of the city's many free or low-cost cultural events and attractions.

7. Network and Make Connections

Finally, make an effort to meet new people and build a social network. This can make your time in Amsterdam much more enjoyable and fulfilling. Join local clubs or groups, attend social events, and don't be afraid to strike up a conversation with locals. While the Dutch may initially seem reserved, they are generally friendly and welcoming once you get to know them.

Living in Amsterdam can be a wonderful adventure. By embracing the local culture, exploring the city's diverse neighborhoods, and making connections with locals, you can make the most of your time in this vibrant and historic city.
