Living in Rotterdam - 7 Tips for Living in Rotterdam

This is a must read if you're moving to Rotterdam or thinking about moving there.

Rotterdam, the second-largest city in the Netherlands, is a vibrant and cosmopolitan city that is increasingly attracting expats and digital nomads from around the world. With its modern architecture, bustling port, and diverse cultural scene, Rotterdam offers a unique blend of old and new, tradition and innovation. Here are seven key tips for those considering making Rotterdam their new home.

1. Get to Know the Neighborhoods

Rotterdam is a city of neighborhoods, each with its own unique character and charm. The city center, known as Centrum, is the heart of Rotterdam, with its modern architecture, shopping streets, and bustling nightlife. Kralingen, on the other hand, is a quieter, more residential area, known for its beautiful parks and the Erasmus University campus. Delfshaven is a historic area with charming old buildings and a picturesque harbor. Spend some time exploring these and other neighborhoods to find the one that suits your lifestyle and preferences best.

2. Learn Some Dutch

While English is widely spoken in Rotterdam, learning some Dutch can greatly enhance your experience. Not only will it make everyday tasks like shopping and navigating the city easier, but it will also help you connect with locals and understand the Dutch culture better. There are many language schools in Rotterdam that offer Dutch courses for beginners.

3. Embrace the Cycling Culture

Like the rest of the Netherlands, Rotterdam is a city of cyclists. Cycling is not only a convenient and eco-friendly way to get around the city, but it's also a great way to explore and get to know Rotterdam. There are plenty of bike rental shops in the city, and many areas have dedicated bike lanes and bike parking facilities.

4. Enjoy the Local Cuisine

Rotterdam has a diverse food scene that reflects its multicultural population. From traditional Dutch herring and stroopwafels to Indonesian rijsttafel and Surinamese roti, there's something for every palate. Some of the city's popular restaurants include FG Restaurant, a Michelin-starred restaurant known for its innovative cuisine, and De Matroos en het Meisje, a cozy eatery that serves a surprise menu based on the day's freshest ingredients.

5. Take Advantage of the City's Cultural Offerings

Rotterdam is a city rich in culture and arts. The city is home to several world-class museums, including the Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen, which houses a vast collection of art from the Middle Ages to the 21st century, and the Kunsthal, which hosts a rotating series of contemporary art exhibitions. The city also hosts numerous festivals throughout the year, such as the International Film Festival Rotterdam and the North Sea Jazz Festival.

6. Explore the Great Outdoors

Despite its urban character, Rotterdam offers plenty of opportunities for outdoor activities. The city is home to several beautiful parks, such as the Kralingse Bos, a large forested park with a lake, and the Het Park, which offers stunning views of the Euromast tower. The city's location on the Maas River also makes it a great place for water sports like sailing and rowing.

7. Get Involved in the Community

One of the best ways to feel at home in a new city is to get involved in the community. Whether it's joining a local club, participating in a neighborhood event, or volunteering for a cause you care about, getting involved can help you meet new people, learn more about the city, and feel more connected to your new home. Research groups and organizations that align with your interests and see how you can contribute.

Living in Rotterdam as an expat or digital nomad can be an exciting and rewarding experience. By taking the time to explore the city, learn the language, and engage with the community, you can make the most of your time in this vibrant Dutch city.
