This is a must read if you're moving to Mendoza or thinking about moving there.
Living as an expat or digital nomad in Mendoza can be an exciting and enriching experience. This city, nestled in the foothills of the Andes, is known for its vibrant culture, stunning landscapes, and world-class wines. However, like any new place, it can take some time to adjust and find your footing. Here are seven key tips to help you make the most of your time in Mendoza.
1. Learn the Language
While many people in Mendoza speak English, especially in the tourism and hospitality industries, it's beneficial to learn some Spanish. Not only will this make everyday tasks like shopping and dining out easier, but it will also open up opportunities for deeper connections with locals. Consider taking a language course or using language exchange apps to practice your skills.
2. Explore the Neighborhoods
Mendoza is made up of several distinct neighborhoods, each with its own unique charm. Centro is the bustling heart of the city, filled with shops, restaurants, and cultural attractions. Chacras de Coria, on the other hand, offers a quieter, more residential feel with its tree-lined streets and charming villas. Maipú is the place to be for wine lovers, as it's home to many of the region's top wineries. Spend some time exploring each neighborhood to find the one that feels like home to you.
3. Embrace the Local Cuisine
Argentinian cuisine is a highlight of living in Mendoza. The city is known for its asado (barbecue), empanadas, and of course, Malbec wine. There are countless restaurants to try, but some local favorites include Maria Antonieta, a chic bistro in Centro, and El Palenque, a traditional steakhouse in Aristides Villanueva. Don't forget to try the local ice cream, or helado, which is often made with fresh, local ingredients.
4. Get Outdoors
Mendoza's location at the foot of the Andes means there are plenty of opportunities for outdoor activities. Parque General San Martin is a popular spot for jogging, cycling, and picnicking, while the nearby mountains offer hiking and climbing. If you're an adventure seeker, you might even try paragliding or white-water rafting in the Mendoza River.
5. Understand the Local Customs
Argentinians have a unique culture with customs that may be different from what you're used to. For example, dinner is typically eaten late, often not until 9 or 10 pm. It's also common to greet friends and acquaintances with a kiss on the cheek. Taking the time to understand these customs will help you feel more at home and avoid any cultural faux pas.
6. Stay Connected
As a digital nomad, reliable internet is a must. While Wi-Fi is widely available in Mendoza, it can sometimes be slow or unreliable. Consider getting a local SIM card for your phone, which will give you access to 4G data. There are also several coworking spaces in the city, such as Espacio Mendoza, which offer high-speed internet and a quiet place to work.
7. Get Involved in the Community
One of the best ways to feel at home in a new place is to get involved in the local community. This could mean joining a local sports team, attending community events, or volunteering. While we won't list specific organizations here, we encourage you to research groups that align with your interests. Not only will this give you a sense of purpose, but it will also help you meet locals and make new friends.
Living in Mendoza, Argentina as an expat or digital nomad can be a rewarding experience. By embracing the local culture, exploring the city, and getting involved in the community, you'll be able to make the most of your time in this beautiful city.
