Summary: Advice for people moving to Amman or thinking about moving there.

This is a must read if you're moving to Amman or thinking about moving there.

Living as an expat or digital nomad in Amman can be an exciting and enriching experience. The city is a blend of ancient history and modern lifestyle, offering a unique cultural experience. Here are seven key tips to help you navigate life in Amman and make the most of your time in this vibrant city.

1. Learn Basic Arabic

While English is widely spoken in Amman, learning basic Arabic can greatly enhance your experience. It will help you navigate the city, interact with locals, and understand the culture better. You don't need to be fluent, but knowing simple phrases and greetings can go a long way. There are many language schools in Amman where you can take Arabic classes.

2. Explore the Neighborhoods

Amman is divided into several neighborhoods, each with its own unique character. Jabal Amman is known for its historic buildings and Rainbow Street, a popular spot for shopping and dining. Abdoun is a modern, upscale neighborhood with many embassies, high-end restaurants, and shopping malls. Weibdeh is a bohemian neighborhood with art galleries, cafes, and a vibrant nightlife. Spend time exploring these neighborhoods to find the one that suits your lifestyle and preferences.

3. Enjoy Local Cuisine

Amman offers a rich culinary scene that you should not miss. Try traditional Jordanian dishes like mansaf, falafel, and hummus at local restaurants. Some popular places to eat include Sufra Restaurant on Rainbow Street, Hashem in Downtown Amman, and Al Quds Restaurant in Weibdeh. Don't forget to try the local sweets like knafeh and baklava.

4. Understand the Culture

Understanding and respecting the local culture is crucial when living in Amman. Jordanians are known for their hospitality and friendliness, but they also value modesty and tradition. Dress modestly, especially when visiting religious sites. Also, be aware that the weekend in Jordan is Friday and Saturday, and many businesses are closed on these days.

5. Visit Historical Sites

Amman is rich in history and culture, and there are many historical sites worth visiting. The Amman Citadel, a historical site dating back to the Bronze Age, offers stunning views of the city. The Roman Theater, a 2nd-century monument, is another must-visit. The Jordan Museum in Ras Al-Ein district is a great place to learn about the country's history and culture.

6. Use Public Transportation

Public transportation in Amman is reliable and affordable. Buses and taxis are the most common means of transportation. The city also has a ride-hailing app called Careem that you can use. However, be aware that traffic can be heavy during peak hours, so plan your travel accordingly.

7. Get Involved in the Community

Getting involved in the local community can make your stay in Amman more fulfilling. There are many opportunities to volunteer, join clubs, or participate in community events. Research groups and organizations that align with your interests and get involved. This is also a great way to meet locals and other expats.

Living in Amman, Jordan as an expat or digital nomad can be a rewarding experience. By understanding the local culture, exploring the city, and getting involved in the community, you can make the most of your time in this vibrant city.
