Summary: Advice for people moving to Dhaka or thinking about moving there.

This is a must read if you're moving to Dhaka or thinking about moving there.

Living in Dhaka as an expat or digital nomad can be an exciting and enriching experience. The city is a bustling metropolis, filled with a rich history, vibrant culture, and friendly locals. However, like any new environment, it can also present its own unique set of challenges. Here are seven key tips to help you navigate life in Dhaka and make the most of your time in this dynamic city.

1. Understand the Local Culture

One of the first steps to feeling at home in Dhaka is to understand and respect the local culture. Bangladesh is a predominantly Muslim country, and its customs and traditions reflect this. Dress modestly, especially when visiting religious sites, and be aware of local etiquette. For example, it's customary to greet people with a slight bow and the phrase "As-Salamu Alaykum". Learning a few basic phrases in Bengali, the local language, can also go a long way in building rapport with the locals.

2. Choose Your Accommodation Wisely

Dhaka is a sprawling city with various neighborhoods, each with its own unique character. Gulshan and Banani are popular among expats for their modern amenities, international schools, and proximity to embassies. Dhanmondi, on the other hand, is known for its cultural scene, with numerous art galleries and music venues. Research the different neighborhoods and choose one that suits your lifestyle and work needs.

3. Navigate the Traffic

Dhaka is infamous for its traffic congestion. The city's narrow streets are often filled with a chaotic mix of cars, rickshaws, and pedestrians. Public transportation can be unreliable, so many expats opt for ride-sharing services like Uber or Pathao. Alternatively, you can hire a driver or use a bicycle for short distances. Always allow extra time when planning your journeys.

4. Enjoy the Local Cuisine

Bangladeshi cuisine is a culinary delight, with a wide variety of dishes to explore. Dhaka is home to numerous restaurants serving both local and international cuisine. Star Kabab & Restaurant in Dhanmondi is famous for its delicious kebabs, while Fakruddin in Gulshan serves some of the best biryani in town. For a taste of traditional Bangladeshi sweets, head to Rosh in Old Dhaka. Remember to drink bottled water and avoid street food until your stomach has adjusted to the local cuisine.

5. Stay Connected

As a digital nomad, staying connected is crucial. Fortunately, Dhaka has a good internet infrastructure, with numerous internet service providers to choose from. Mobile data is also widely available and relatively cheap. Consider getting a local SIM card for your phone to stay connected on the go. Co-working spaces are also becoming increasingly popular in Dhaka, providing a great environment for networking and productivity.

6. Explore the City's Attractions

Dhaka has a rich history and culture, with plenty to see and do. Visit the Lalbagh Fort, a 17th-century Mughal fort, or the National Museum to learn about the country's history. The city's numerous parks, such as Ramna Park and Baldha Garden, provide a peaceful respite from the city's hustle and bustle. Don't miss the chance to take a boat ride on the Buriganga River and explore the city's bustling riverfront.

7. Get Involved

Finally, getting involved in the local community can greatly enhance your experience in Dhaka. There are numerous opportunities to volunteer, join clubs, or participate in local events. This not only allows you to give back to the community but also provides a great way to meet locals and other expats. Research groups and activities that align with your interests and get involved.

Living in Dhaka as an expat or digital nomad can be a rewarding experience, filled with new sights, sounds, and experiences. By understanding the local culture, choosing the right accommodation, navigating the traffic, enjoying the local cuisine, staying connected, exploring the city's attractions, and getting involved in the community, you can make the most of your time in this vibrant city.
