Summary: If you're a newcomer in Estonia and enrolling your children in school in Estonia, here's how:

Enrolling your child in a public school in Estonia as an expat can seem like a daunting task, but with the right preparation and understanding of the process, it can be made simpler. The Estonian education system is highly regarded and offers a variety of options for expat families. However, it is important to be aware of the necessary paperwork and procedures to ensure a smooth transition for your child. This includes understanding the application process, knowing the required documents, and being aware of the deadlines. This guide will provide a step-by-step process to help you navigate through the enrollment process.

  1. Residency Permit: The first step is to ensure that you have a valid residency permit for Estonia. This is a prerequisite for enrolling your child in a public school. If you are an EU citizen, you will need to register your residence after you have lived in Estonia for 3 months. Non-EU citizens will need to apply for a residence permit.
  2. Choose a School: Research and choose a school that best suits your child's needs. Consider factors such as the curriculum, language of instruction, location, and the school's resources. You can find a list of public schools on the Estonian Ministry of Education and Research website.
  3. Application: Once you have chosen a school, you will need to fill out an application form. This can usually be found on the school's website or obtained directly from the school. The application will require basic information about your child and your family.
  4. Required Documents: Along with the application, you will need to provide several documents. These typically include your child's birth certificate, proof of your residency in Estonia, your residency permit, and a health certificate for your child. Some schools may also require a report card or transcript from your child's previous school.
  5. Submission: Submit the application and all required documents to the school. This can usually be done by mail, email, or in person. Make sure to submit everything before the application deadline.
  6. Confirmation: After your application has been reviewed, the school will notify you of your child's acceptance. This can take a few weeks, so be patient. Once accepted, there may be additional paperwork to complete, such as a school contract.
  7. Start of School: Once all the paperwork is complete, your child can start school. The school year in Estonia typically starts in September, but it may be possible for your child to start at other times of the year, depending on the school's policies.
