Summary: If you're a newcomer in France and enrolling your children in school in France, here's how:

Enrolling your child in a public school in France can seem like a daunting task, especially if you're an expat and unfamiliar with the French education system. However, the process is quite straightforward once you understand the steps involved. You will need to have certain documents ready, such as proof of residence, your child's birth certificate, and vaccination records. It's also important to note that the school year in France typically starts in early September, so it's best to start the enrollment process well in advance.

  1. Research Schools: Start by researching the public schools in your area. In France, children usually attend the school closest to their home. However, you can request a different school if you have a valid reason.
  2. Obtain the Necessary Documents: You will need your child's birth certificate, proof of residence (like a utility bill or rental agreement), and your child's vaccination records. If you're from a non-EU country, you may also need to provide a residency permit.
  3. Visit the Local Town Hall: Once you have all the necessary documents, visit your local town hall (mairie). They will provide you with a certificate of school inscription (certificat d'inscription scolaire) which confirms your child's right to attend a public school.
  4. Visit the School: After obtaining the certificate from the town hall, visit the school you've chosen. You will need to provide them with the certificate of school inscription, your child's birth certificate, proof of residence, and vaccination records. The school will then provide you with a certificate of enrollment (certificat de scolarité).
  5. Buy School Supplies: Once your child is enrolled, you will receive a list of required school supplies. These can usually be purchased at any local supermarket or stationery store.
  6. Attend the First Day of School: On the first day of school, accompany your child to help them get acquainted with their new environment. Most schools have an orientation day for new students and their parents.
