How to Enroll Your Children in School in Iceland
Summary: If you're a newcomer in Iceland and enrolling your children in school in Iceland, here's how:
Enrolling your child in a public school in Iceland may seem like a daunting task, especially if you are new to the country. However, the process is relatively straightforward once you understand the steps involved. The Icelandic education system is inclusive and accessible, but there are certain requirements and paperwork that you need to prepare. This includes your child's birth certificate, proof of residence, and your legal status in the country. It's also important to note that the school year in Iceland typically starts in late August or early September, so it's advisable to start the enrollment process well in advance.
- Firstly, you need to establish your legal residence in Iceland. This involves registering with the National Registry (Þjóðskrá). You will need to provide proof of your address in Iceland and your immigration status.
- Once you have established your legal residence, you can apply for a kennitala for your child if they don't already have one. A kennitala is a unique identification number that all residents in Iceland must have. You can apply for a kennitala at the National Registry.
- Next, you need to choose a school for your child. In Iceland, children typically attend the school that is closest to their home. You can find information about the schools in your area on the website of the Ministry of Education, Science and Culture (Mennta- og menningarmálaráðuneytið).
- Once you have chosen a school, you need to contact the school directly to inquire about the enrollment process. The school will provide you with an application form that you need to fill out. The form will ask for information such as your child's name, date of birth, kennitala, and previous education history.
- Along with the application form, you will also need to provide certain documents. This typically includes your child's birth certificate, proof of your residence in Iceland, and proof of your legal status in the country. Some schools may also ask for a health certificate for your child.
- After you have submitted the application form and all the required documents, the school will review your application. If your application is accepted, the school will provide you with information about the start date and other important details.
- Finally, before your child starts school, there may be an orientation session. This is a great opportunity for you and your child to get to know the school, meet the teachers, and ask any questions you may have.
