Education in Israel - How to Enroll Your Children in School in Israel

Enrolling your child in a public school in Israel can be a complex process, especially for expats who are unfamiliar with the system. It requires a fair amount of paperwork and understanding of the Israeli education system. The process involves several steps, including obtaining the necessary documents, choosing the right school, and registering your child. This guide will provide you with a step-by-step process to help you navigate through the enrollment process smoothly.

  1. Obtain the necessary documents: Before you can enroll your child in a public school in Israel, you will need to have several documents ready. These include your child's birth certificate, passport or identity card, immunization records, and proof of residence (such as a utility bill or rental agreement). If your child has previously attended school, you will also need their academic records.
  2. Choose the right school: In Israel, children are typically assigned to the public school nearest to their home. However, you can also choose a different school if it better suits your child's needs. Consider factors such as the school's curriculum, teaching philosophy, and extracurricular activities. You may also want to consider whether the school has support for non-Hebrew speaking students if your child is not yet fluent in Hebrew.
  3. Register your child: Once you have chosen a school, you will need to register your child. This can usually be done online or in person at the school. You will need to provide all the necessary documents and fill out a registration form. The form will ask for information such as your child's name, date of birth, and previous schooling.
  4. Attend a meeting or interview: After you have submitted the registration form, the school may invite you for a meeting or interview. This is an opportunity for the school to get to know your child and for you to ask any questions you may have. It's also a chance for your child to see the school and meet some of the teachers.
  5. Wait for confirmation: Once the registration process is complete, you will need to wait for confirmation from the school. This can take a few weeks, so be patient. Once you receive confirmation, your child will be officially enrolled in the school and can start attending classes.
