Education in Sweden - How to Enroll Your Children in School in Sweden

Enrolling your child in a public school in Sweden as an expat can seem like a daunting task, but with the right preparation and understanding of the process, it can be made simpler. The Swedish education system is known for its high-quality education and inclusivity, making it an excellent choice for expat families. However, it's important to be aware of the necessary paperwork and procedures to ensure a smooth transition for your child. This includes understanding the school system, knowing the required documents, and being aware of the deadlines. This guide will provide a step-by-step process to help you navigate through the enrollment process.

  1. Residence Permit: Before you can enroll your child in a Swedish public school, you must have a valid residence permit. This is a requirement for all expats planning to stay in Sweden for more than three months.
  2. Personal Identity Number: Apply for a Personal Identity Number (Personnummer) for your child at the Swedish Tax Agency (Skatteverket). This number is crucial for accessing public services in Sweden, including education.
  3. Choose a School: Research and choose a school for your child. In Sweden, children are typically assigned to the nearest school, but parents can request a different school if they wish. It's important to note that popular schools may have waiting lists.
  4. Application: Once you've chosen a school, you'll need to fill out an application form. This can usually be done online through the school's website or the local municipality's website. The application will require your child's Personal Identity Number and details about your residence permit.
  5. Required Documents: Along with the application, you'll need to provide copies of your child's birth certificate, passport, immunization records, and any relevant academic records. If these documents are not in Swedish or English, they may need to be translated.
  6. Submit the Application: Submit the application and all required documents to the school or local municipality. It's recommended to do this as early as possible to secure a place for your child.
  7. Confirmation: Once your application has been processed, you'll receive a confirmation of your child's enrollment. This will include details about the start date, school hours, and any necessary school supplies.
  8. Introduction Meeting: Most schools will arrange an introduction meeting for new students and their parents. This is a great opportunity to meet the teachers, see the school facilities, and ask any questions you may have.
