Summary: If you're a newcomer in Vietnam and enrolling your children in school in Vietnam, here's how:

Enrolling your child in a public school in Vietnam as an expat can be a complex process, especially if you are unfamiliar with the Vietnamese education system and language. It requires careful preparation and a good understanding of the necessary paperwork and procedures. You will need to have several documents ready, including your child's birth certificate, passport, visa, and health records. Additionally, you may need to provide proof of your residence in Vietnam. It's also important to note that the academic year in Vietnam typically starts in September, so it's advisable to start the enrollment process well in advance.

  1. Research Schools: Start by researching the public schools in your area. Consider factors such as the school's curriculum, location, facilities, and reputation. You can find information online or ask for recommendations from other expats.
  2. Visit the School: Once you have shortlisted a few schools, arrange for a visit. This will give you a better understanding of the school's environment and teaching methods. It's also a good opportunity to ask any questions you may have.
  3. Prepare the Necessary Documents: Gather all the required documents. These typically include your child's birth certificate, passport, visa, and health records. You may also need to provide proof of your residence in Vietnam. Make sure all documents are translated into Vietnamese.
  4. Submit the Application: Submit the application form along with the necessary documents to the school. The application form can usually be obtained from the school's office or website. It's advisable to submit the application as early as possible to secure a place for your child.
  5. Pay the Fees: Once your application is accepted, you will need to pay the school fees. The fees for public schools in Vietnam are generally lower than those for international schools, but they can still vary depending on the school and grade level.
  6. Prepare Your Child: Help your child prepare for the new school environment. This may involve learning some basic Vietnamese phrases, familiarizing them with the school's rules and routines, and encouraging them to be open to making new friends.
