Summary: Plan a day trip or weekend getaway to get some holiday cheer. This article highlights the best places to visit in Kiribati for Christmas cheer.

As the festive season approaches, expats and digital nomads in Kiribati may be yearning for a taste of holiday cheer. While Kiribati itself offers a unique cultural experience, those looking to immerse themselves in traditional Christmas festivities can explore several destinations around the globe renowned for their holiday spirit. From enchanting markets to spectacular light displays, these places are sure to fill your December with joy and merriment.

Strasbourg, France

Strasbourg is famously known as the "Capital of Christmas," and for good reason. Its Christkindelsmärik, the oldest Christmas market in France, dates back to 1570. The city transforms into a winter wonderland with its half-timbered houses adorned with festive decorations. The market is a treasure trove of handcrafted gifts, ornaments, and Alsatian delicacies. The aroma of mulled wine and gingerbread fills the air, particularly in the Place de la Cathédrale, where the towering Christmas tree stands. The market typically runs from late November to Christmas Eve.

We Recommend: Don't miss the chance to try the local bredele biscuits, a traditional Christmas treat that comes in various shapes and flavors. Pair them with a cup of vin chaud (mulled wine) for the full Strasbourg experience.

Nuremberg, Germany

The Nuremberg Christkindlesmarkt is one of the most famous Christmas markets in the world. Set in the city's main square, the market is known for its distinctive red and white cloth-topped stalls. Visitors can find everything from unique ornaments to traditional German toys. The Nuremberg Christmas Angel opens the market with a prologue, a tradition that dates back to the 16th century. The market usually starts on the Friday before the first Sunday in Advent and continues until December 24th.

We Recommend: Be sure to taste the Nuremberg Lebkuchen, a gingerbread-like baked treat that is a hallmark of the market. Also, the Nuremberg bratwurst is a must-try savory snack.

Vienna, Austria

Vienna's Christmas markets, or "Christkindlmarkt," are a sight to behold. The city's historic squares, including Rathausplatz and Schönbrunn Palace, are transformed into magical markets. The Viennese Dream Christmas Market in front of the City Hall is particularly enchanting, with its ice-skating rink and festive lights. The markets typically open in mid-November and run until Christmas or New Year's Day.

We Recommend: Indulge in some Weihnachtspunsch, a spiced punch that warms you from the inside out. Also, the Wiener Schnitzel is a classic Austrian dish not to be missed.

London's Chelsea Neighborhood

London's Chelsea neighborhood becomes a festive hub during the holiday season. The famous King's Road is lined with twinkling lights and elegant decorations. The Chelsea Christmas Shopping Weekend, usually held in early December, is a perfect time to find unique gifts and enjoy the holiday atmosphere. The area is also known for its stylish boutiques and high-end shops, which often have their own festive displays.

We Recommend: Stop by one of the local bakeries for a mince pie, a British Christmas staple, or enjoy a traditional afternoon tea with a festive twist at one of Chelsea's upscale hotels.

Little Italy in NYC

Little Italy in New York City is known for its Feast of the Seven Fishes, an Italian-American Christmas Eve tradition. The neighborhood's restaurants and eateries offer special holiday menus that feature this seafood feast. Mulberry Street and the surrounding area are adorned with festive lights and decorations, creating a cozy holiday atmosphere. The neighborhood's holiday spirit is palpable throughout December.

We Recommend: Experience the Feast of the Seven Fishes at one of Little Italy's authentic Italian restaurants. For dessert, cannoli and pignoli cookies are local favorites.

Prague, Czech Republic

Prague's Christmas markets are a highlight of the holiday season, with the main ones located at the Old Town Square and Wenceslas Square. The markets start in late November and last until early January. The city's Gothic and Baroque architecture provides a stunning backdrop for the wooden huts selling traditional Czech crafts, toys, and holiday treats. The Old Town Square features a large Christmas tree that is beautifully lit, creating a magical atmosphere.

We Recommend: Try the trdelník, a traditional rolled pastry topped with sugar and nuts, and wash it down with sva?ák, Czech mulled wine.

Edinburgh, Scotland

Edinburgh's Christmas is a six-week season of festive entertainment in the heart of the city. The celebrations include a Christmas market in East Princes Street Gardens, offering a mix of local and European crafts and food items. The city also hosts various events, such as ice skating, a Christmas tree maze, and Santa Land for the little ones. The festivities usually kick off in late November and run until early January.

We Recommend: Don't leave without trying a hot toddy or a dram of Scotch whisky to keep warm, and be sure to sample some Scottish shortbread, a buttery delight.

Bruges, Belgium

Bruges, with its medieval architecture and cobbled streets, is like a scene from a Christmas card during the holiday season. The Bruges Christmas Market, located in the Market Square and Simon Stevinplein, is filled with stalls selling handcrafted goods, Belgian chocolates, and waffles. The ice rink and Christmas tree add to the festive ambiance. The market typically runs from late November to early January.

We Recommend: Belgian chocolates are a must-buy, but also try the oliebollen, a type of doughnut that's a popular treat at the market.
