Summary: Plan a day trip or weekend getaway to get some holiday cheer. This article highlights the best places to visit in Laos for Christmas cheer.

Laos may not be the first country that comes to mind when thinking of Christmas celebrations, but expats and digital nomads looking for a festive atmosphere in December will find pockets of holiday spirit sprinkled throughout the country. While Laos is predominantly Buddhist, the influence of French colonialism and a growing expat community have led to the emergence of Christmas festivities in various places. Here are some spots where you can soak up the holiday cheer in Laos.

Vientiane

The capital city of Laos, Vientiane, offers a surprisingly merry atmosphere during the Christmas season. The city's international community and local businesses often put up decorations, and you can find Christmas trees and lights adorning restaurants and hotels. A notable spot is the Vientiane Center, where a holiday market typically features a variety of goods, from festive decorations to handcrafted items perfect for gifts. While there isn't a specific treat that is famous, you can enjoy a range of international and local foods that cater to the diverse population of the city.

We Recommend: Don't miss the opportunity to try the French-inspired pastries and desserts that are especially popular during the holiday season. Bakeries and cafes may offer special Christmas-themed treats that blend Lao flavors with traditional holiday recipes.

Luang Prabang

Luang Prabang, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is known for its well-preserved architecture and cultural heritage. During December, the town takes on a festive air with its night market and boutique hotels offering holiday-themed events. The Luang Prabang Christmas Fair, usually held in early December, is a charming event where you can find handmade crafts, local art, and delicious food. The fair also often features performances and activities for children, making it a family-friendly destination.

We Recommend: Be sure to sample the mulled wine that's often available at the Christmas Fair. It's a warm and comforting drink that's perfect for the cooler evenings in Luang Prabang.

Vang Vieng

Vang Vieng, known for its stunning limestone karsts and outdoor activities, also gets into the holiday spirit. Many of the town's guesthouses and adventure companies decorate for the season, and you can find Christmas dinners being served at several restaurants. While there isn't a specific holiday market, the town's regular night market may have vendors selling seasonal items and souvenirs.

We Recommend: After a day of exploring, enjoy a festive dinner at one of the riverside restaurants, where you can often find traditional Christmas dishes with a Lao twist.

Pakse

In the southern city of Pakse, Christmas is celebrated with a touch of local culture. The expat community here, though smaller, comes together to create a cozy holiday atmosphere. Some cafes and restaurants offer special Christmas menus, and you might stumble upon small Christmas gatherings or events organized by the local international community.

We Recommend: Look out for the Christmas Eve dinners that are often hosted by hotels and restaurants, where you can enjoy a blend of international and Lao cuisines in a festive setting.

Savannakhet

Savannakhet, with its charming French colonial architecture, provides a quaint backdrop for Christmas festivities. The town's modest expat community often leads the way in organizing holiday events, which can include Christmas bazaars or charity fundraisers. These events are a great way to meet locals and other expats while enjoying the holiday spirit.

We Recommend: Attend any Christmas charity events that may be happening, as they often feature homemade treats and crafts, with proceeds going to local causes.

Little Italy in Vientiane

In Vientiane's Little Italy neighborhood, you'll find a slice of European Christmas charm. Italian restaurants and bakeries in this area go all out with decorations, and you can enjoy seasonal specialties like panettone and festive pasta dishes. The cozy atmosphere makes it a great place to celebrate with friends and enjoy a hearty holiday meal.

We Recommend: Indulge in a traditional Italian Christmas dessert like panettone or pandoro, which you can find at the local Italian bakeries during the holiday season.

French Quarter in Vientiane

The French Quarter in Vientiane is where the city's colonial past and present-day festivities converge. During December, the area's French restaurants and cafes often feature holiday decorations and menus with traditional French Christmas dishes. It's a wonderful place to experience a touch of European elegance in the heart of Laos.

We Recommend: Treat yourself to a French-style Christmas dinner at one of the quarter's upscale restaurants, where you can enjoy classics like foie gras, roast duck, and bûche de Noël.

While Laos may not have the same level of Christmas celebration as some Western countries, the places mentioned above offer a festive atmosphere that can make the holiday season feel special for expats and digital nomads. Whether you're looking for a traditional Christmas market, a cozy dinner, or a community event, you'll find ways to get into the holiday spirit in Laos.
