Summary: Plan a day trip or weekend getaway to get some holiday cheer. This article highlights the best places to visit in Malta for Christmas cheer.

As the festive season approaches, Malta transforms into a winter wonderland, offering expats and digital nomads a unique blend of traditional Maltese celebrations and Christmas cheer. From the historic streets of Valletta to the charming village squares, the island is adorned with twinkling lights, nativity scenes, and holiday markets. Whether you're looking to indulge in seasonal treats, shop for artisanal gifts, or simply soak up the festive atmosphere, these destinations in Malta are sure to fill your December with holiday spirit.

Valletta

The capital city of Malta, Valletta, is a hub of Christmas festivities. The city comes alive with lights, decorations, and a large Christmas tree set against the backdrop of historic buildings. The main streets, such as Republic Street, are lined with shops and cafes offering seasonal delights. The Valletta Christmas Market is a must-visit, where you can find handcrafted gifts, decorations, and traditional Maltese sweets like 'Qag?aq tal-G?asel' (honey rings). Cultural events, including carol singing and live nativity scenes, add to the city's enchanting atmosphere throughout December.

We Recommend: Don't miss the opportunity to taste the warm, spiced mulled wine that's often available at the market stalls. It's the perfect companion to keep you cozy while you explore the festive streets.

Mdina

Mdina, Malta's old capital, known as the "Silent City," offers a more tranquil Christmas experience. The narrow, lamp-lit streets and medieval architecture provide a magical setting for the holiday season. During December, Mdina's palazzos and churches are beautifully lit, and the air is filled with the scent of seasonal treats from the quaint cafes. The Mdina Cathedral Museum organizes an annual Christmas concert, which is a highlight for both locals and visitors, typically held in mid-December.

We Recommend: Make sure to visit Fontanella Tea Garden for their famous chocolate cake, which you can enjoy with a view of the festively decorated city from the bastion walls.

Sliema

Sliema is known for its modern vibe and shopping opportunities, making it a popular spot for Christmas shopping and festivities. The Sliema Promenade is particularly festive, with street performers, holiday decorations, and a view of the Mediterranean Sea. Tigne Point, one of the largest shopping malls in Malta, is decked out in Christmas decor and offers a variety of seasonal activities for families, including a visit from Santa Claus. The promenade also hosts a Christmas market where you can find unique gifts and indulge in holiday treats.

We Recommend: After some holiday shopping, enjoy a leisurely stroll along the promenade and stop by one of the many cafes for a hot chocolate topped with whipped cream and a sprinkle of cinnamon.

Rabat

Rabat plays a special role in Maltese Christmas traditions, as it is home to numerous nativity scenes, including live reenactments. The town's historical significance, with close proximity to the ancient city of Mdina, adds to the solemnity and reverence of the season. The highlight in Rabat is the 'Bethlehem f'G?ajnsielem,' an animated nativity village set up on the outskirts of the town, which recreates the town of Bethlehem at the time of Jesus' birth. This event usually starts in early December and runs through the holiday season.

We Recommend: Don't miss the chance to taste the traditional 'Imbuljuta tal-Qastan,' a warm chestnut and chocolate drink, often served during the Christmas period and especially after midnight Mass on Christmas Eve.

Gozo

The island of Gozo, though smaller than the main island, is big on Christmas spirit. Victoria, the capital city, is particularly festive with its Christmas lights, decorations, and the annual 'Gozo Christmas Village' or 'Natalis Notabilis.' The village's narrow streets are transformed into a Christmas wonderland with a market selling everything from crafts to festive food. The Cittadella, an ancient fortress, also hosts various events, including choirs and live nativity scenes, offering a historical backdrop to the celebrations.

We Recommend: Be sure to try the 'Qag?aq tal-G?asel' and 'Pastizzi' (savoury ricotta-filled pastries), which are Gozitan holiday favourites found at the Christmas Village.

Mellieha

Mellieha is renowned for its impressive Christmas Village, which is set up in the main square. The village features a variety of stalls selling traditional Maltese Christmas food, handmade gifts, and decorations. The local parish church is beautifully illuminated, and the area often hosts carol singing and live performances. Mellieha's Christmas Village creates a warm and inviting atmosphere for all who visit during the festive season.

We Recommend: Try the 'Pudina tal-Milied,' a Maltese Christmas pudding that's rich in flavors of chocolate, citrus, and spices, often found at the Christmas Village.

Birgu (Vittoriosa)

Birgu, also known as Vittoriosa, is one of the Three Cities and offers a historical setting for Christmas celebrations. The streets are adorned with festive lights and decorations, and the waterfront provides a picturesque setting for evening strolls. Birgu by Candlelight is a special event where the city is lit by thousands of candles, creating a warm and intimate atmosphere. This event typically takes place in early December and includes a variety of activities, from historical reenactments to artisan markets.

We Recommend: During Birgu by Candlelight, make sure to sample the 'Minestra,' a hearty Maltese vegetable soup that's perfect for the cooler December evenings.

Mosta

Mosta is famous for its Rotunda, a large dome that is beautifully lit during the Christmas season. The town center becomes a festive hub with decorations and lights, and local vendors sell seasonal items and traditional Maltese foods. Mosta also hosts a Christmas market where you can find handcrafted gifts and enjoy the holiday atmosphere. The town's Christmas celebrations are a blend of religious reverence and festive fun, making it a great place to experience Maltese holiday traditions.

We Recommend: Don't leave without trying 'Kannoli,' tube-shaped crispy pastry filled with ricotta, often enjoyed during the festive season.
