Summary: Plan a day trip or weekend getaway to get some holiday cheer. This article highlights the best places to visit in Namibia for Christmas cheer.

As the festive season approaches, expats and digital nomads in Namibia might be wondering where to soak up the holiday spirit. While Namibia may not be the first place that comes to mind for traditional Christmas festivities, there are several places within this beautiful country that come alive during December. From vibrant markets to festive events, here are some of the best spots to visit for a memorable holiday experience in Namibia.

Windhoek's Christkindlmarkt

Windhoek, the capital city of Namibia, hosts an annual Christmas market known as the Christkindlmarkt. This market typically takes place in early December and is reminiscent of the traditional German Christmas markets, reflecting Namibia's colonial heritage. Visitors can browse through a variety of stalls selling handcrafted gifts, decorations, and festive treats. The market is also known for its array of delicious German-inspired foods, such as bratwurst and stollen, a traditional fruit bread.

We Recommend: Don't miss the chance to try the Glühwein, a warm mulled wine that's a staple at the market. It's the perfect way to keep cozy while enjoying the festive atmosphere.

Swakopmund's Christmas Market

Swakopmund, with its German colonial architecture, offers a charming Christmas market usually held in mid-December. The coastal town transforms into a festive wonderland with twinkling lights and holiday decorations. Artisans and vendors sell a variety of crafts, ornaments, and unique gifts perfect for the holiday season. The market also features performances by local choirs and bands, adding to the merry ambiance.

We Recommend: Be sure to sample some of the homemade baked goods, especially the traditional German cookies and cakes that are a hit among locals and visitors alike.

Walvis Bay's Waterfront

The waterfront area in Walvis Bay becomes a hub of activity during the holiday season. While not a traditional market, the area is known for its festive decorations and the array of seafood restaurants that offer special holiday menus. The cool ocean breeze and the sound of the waves provide a unique setting for holiday celebrations.

We Recommend: Enjoy a festive meal at one of the waterfront restaurants, where you can indulge in fresh oysters and other seafood delicacies while taking in the view of the decorated boats in the marina.

Omaruru's Christmas Festival

Omaruru, a small town in central Namibia, hosts an annual Christmas festival that brings the community together. The festival features a parade, live music, and a variety of stalls selling local crafts and foods. It's a great opportunity to experience the holiday spirit with a Namibian twist, and the festival usually takes place on a weekend in early December.

We Recommend: Don't miss the traditional Namibian barbeque, or "braai," which is a highlight of the festival and offers a taste of local flavors.

Tsumeb's Christmas Lights

Tsumeb, known for its mining history, lights up during December with an impressive display of Christmas lights. The town's main street and public spaces are adorned with colorful lights and decorations, creating a magical atmosphere for evening strolls. Local shops and cafes also join in the festivities, offering holiday specials and treats.

We Recommend: Take a leisurely walk through the town center to fully enjoy the dazzling light displays and the festive ambiance that fills the air.

Okahandja's Craft Market

While not specifically a Christmas market, Okahandja's famous craft market is a must-visit for those looking for unique holiday gifts. Open year-round, the market becomes particularly festive in December as vendors decorate their stalls and offer a range of handcrafted items, from wood carvings to woven baskets, that make for perfect presents.

We Recommend: Look out for the beautifully crafted wooden ornaments that can add a touch of Namibian culture to your Christmas tree.

Lüderitz's Diaz Festival

Lüderitz, a coastal town with a rich history, celebrates the Diaz Festival in December. This event commemorates the arrival of the Portuguese explorer Bartolomeu Dias in 1488. While it's more of a historical celebration than a Christmas event, the festival brings a festive spirit to the town with live music, cultural performances, and a variety of food stalls.

We Recommend: Experience the fusion of cultures at the festival by trying some of the local seafood dishes, which are a blend of African and Portuguese flavors.

Katutura in Windhoek

Katutura, a vibrant neighborhood in Windhoek, offers a different perspective on holiday celebrations. The streets come alive with music and informal markets where you can find everything from festive decorations to traditional attire. It's a place to experience the holiday season through the lens of local customs and community spirit.

We Recommend: Engage with the local artisans and purchase handmade crafts that not only serve as unique gifts but also support the community's economy.

Whether you're looking for traditional Christmas markets, festive lights, or cultural festivals, Namibia has a variety of places that exude holiday cheer. These destinations offer a blend of local traditions and international influences, providing a unique and memorable experience for expats and digital nomads during the festive season.
