Health Insurance in Vietnam
Summary: Making the move to Vietnam? One critical choice you'll face is between local health insurance and expat health insurance. Our article provides a comprehensive comparison of both, enriched with insights from expats in Vietnam on their personal insurance decisions.
Vietnam's healthcare system has been developing rapidly, and with the influx of expats and digital nomads, understanding the health insurance landscape is crucial. Health insurance in Vietnam comes in various forms, from local companies to specialized expat policies, each with its own set of benefits and limitations.
Health Insurance Companies in Vietnam
Several health insurance companies operate in Vietnam, offering a range of policies to both locals and expats. Some of the most popular insurers include Bao Viet, PTI, and Liberty Insurance. These companies provide various plans that can cater to different needs, from basic coverage to more comprehensive plans. Expats are eligible to purchase health insurance from these companies, and many find it a viable option for ensuring access to healthcare services while living in Vietnam.
Expat Health Insurance in Vietnam
Expats living in Vietnam often opt for specialized expat health insurance policies. These policies are tailored to the unique needs of foreigners living abroad, offering wider coverage and often including international medical assistance. The reason some expats choose these over local insurance plans is the added flexibility, the ability to receive treatment at private hospitals, and the convenience of English-speaking support, which can be particularly important in emergency situations.
Local Health Insurance vs. Expat Health Insurance
When it comes to choosing between local health insurance and specialized expat health insurance, expats and digital nomads often weigh the pros and cons of each. Local insurance plans are typically more affordable and cover basic healthcare needs within Vietnam. However, expat health insurance usually provides broader coverage, including the option for treatment in other countries, which can be a significant advantage for those who travel frequently or prefer the assurance of international medical standards.
Considerations for Health Insurance Abroad
When deciding on health insurance while living overseas, there are several important factors to consider. One key aspect is whether the insurer offers direct billing with hospitals or if you'll need to pay upfront and seek reimbursement later. The convenience of direct billing can be a major relief in times of emergency. Additionally, understanding the extent of coverage, including whether it extends to repatriation or evacuation, is crucial. It's also important to consider the network of hospitals and clinics covered by the policy, the ease of filing claims, and the level of customer support provided, especially in your preferred language.
Expats talk about Health Insurance in Vietnam
"Cigna is expensive for us simply, because when we go to the USA we are not covered. So, we get a travel insurance and pay out of pocket for most heavy expenses. For example, I had to be hospitalized on a visit home and I didn't even reach the 5K deductible. It's frustrating. I get reimbursed for other expenses that I incur for example, dental emergencies etc. I am reconsidering how to deal with this situation in the next year," commented one expat living in Da Nang, Vietnam.
