Summary: Is health insurance a requirement when you are moving to Vietnam? This article explores health insurance requirements for newcomers to Vietnam.

When planning a move to Vietnam as an expat or digital nomad, one of the essential considerations is healthcare. Vietnam does not currently mandate that expats or long-term visitors have health insurance upon arrival, but it is highly recommended. The country has a public healthcare system, but it may not cover all the needs of foreigners, and the quality of care can vary significantly between urban and rural areas. Private healthcare facilities offer higher standards of care and are preferred by most expats, but costs can be high without adequate insurance. While there is no minimum coverage amount or length of coverage required by law for residency, having a comprehensive health insurance plan can save you from incurring substantial medical expenses and provide peace of mind.

Does Expat Health Insurance Meet the Requirements?

Since Vietnam does not enforce strict health insurance requirements for residency, most expat health insurance plans will meet the non-existent legal stipulations. However, it is crucial to ensure that your chosen plan provides sufficient coverage for private healthcare facilities in Vietnam, as these are typically where expats receive care. Look for plans that offer comprehensive medical coverage, including hospitalization, emergency services, and possibly medical evacuation. Some insurance plans designed for expats and digital nomads also include additional benefits like routine check-ups, dental care, and vision care, which can be advantageous.

Which local health insurers offer this type of insurance?

There are several local health insurers in Vietnam that offer plans catering to the needs of expats. Companies such as Bao Viet Insurance, PTI Insurance, and Bao Minh Insurance are well-established in the country and provide a range of health insurance products that can be suitable for foreigners living in Vietnam. These insurers typically offer plans that allow access to both public and private healthcare networks, with varying levels of coverage to suit different needs and budgets. It's important to compare the plans carefully, considering factors like coverage limits, deductibles, co-payments, and the network of hospitals and clinics included.

Advice from Expats in Vietnam about Health Insurance

Experienced expats in Vietnam often stress the importance of obtaining a health insurance plan that offers extensive coverage, as healthcare costs can escalate quickly, especially in private hospitals. They advise newcomers to look for plans with a high coverage limit to ensure that all potential medical expenses are covered. Additionally, it's recommended to check the insurer's reputation for customer service and claims processing, as this can significantly impact your experience in the event of a medical emergency. Expats also suggest considering plans that include coverage for chronic conditions, maternity care, and mental health services, as these are areas where public healthcare may fall short. Lastly, it's wise to review the terms and conditions of any insurance policy carefully to understand what is and isn't covered, to avoid any surprises when you need to use your insurance.

Expats Talk about Health Insurance in Vietnam

"Cigna is expensive for us simply, because when we go to the USA we are not covered. So, we get a travel insurance and pay out of pocket for most heavy expenses. For example, I had to be hospitalized on a visit home and I didn't even reach the 5K deductible. It's frustrating. I get reimbursed for other expenses that I incur for example, dental emergencies etc. I am reconsidering how to deal with this situation in the next year," said one expat who moved to Da Nang, Vietnam.
