Summary: What are the best markets in Taipei? In this article we highlight the best markets in Taipei.

Taipei, the bustling capital of Taiwan, is a haven for expats and digital nomads who crave the excitement of urban life alongside the comfort of accessible amenities. One of the city's charms is its vibrant market scene, offering everything from delectable street food to unique crafts, clothing, and more. Whether you're looking to fill your pantry, find a one-of-a-kind gift, or simply soak up the local atmosphere, Taipei's markets are an essential part of the experience. Here are some of the best markets in Taipei that you should not miss.

Shilin Night Market

Location: No. 101, Jihe Road, Shilin District, Taipei City
Type of Market: Night Market
Open: Daily, 3:00 PM - 1:00 AM

Shilin Night Market is one of the largest and most famous night markets in Taipei. It's a sprawling maze of food stalls, game booths, and shops selling an array of items from trendy clothes to souvenirs. The market is always buzzing with energy and is a great place to experience the local nightlife and street food culture.

We Recommend: Trying the iconic Taiwanese snack, "stinky tofu," which is known for its pungent aroma but delicious taste. Also, don't miss out on the succulent grilled sausages and bubble tea.

Raohe Street Night Market

Location: Raohe Street, Songshan District, Taipei City
Type of Market: Night Market
Open: Daily, 5:00 PM - Midnight

Raohe Street Night Market is one of the oldest night markets in Taipei and is well-loved for its authentic Taiwanese street food. The market is a long stretch of stalls and eateries, offering a more traditional market experience. It's a great place to sample a variety of local dishes and snacks.

We Recommend: The pepper buns (hu jiao bing) are a must-try here. These are baked buns filled with peppery pork and scallions, cooked in a tandoor-like oven.

Tonghua Night Market (Linjiang Street Night Market)

Location: Linjiang Street, Da’an District, Taipei City
Type of Market: Night Market
Open: Daily, 6:00 PM - 2:00 AM

Tonghua Night Market, also known as Linjiang Street Night Market, is popular among both locals and expats. It's smaller and less touristy than Shilin, offering a more intimate atmosphere. Here, you can find a wide variety of food, as well as clothing and accessories at reasonable prices.

We Recommend:: Indulge in some mango shaved ice, a refreshing treat perfect for Taipei's warm nights, or savor the taste of Taiwanese oyster omelets.

Jianguo Holiday Flower Market

Location: Jianguo South Road, Da’an District, Taipei City
Type of Market: Flower Market
Open: Weekends, 9:00 AM - 6:00 PM

The Jianguo Holiday Flower Market is a delightful destination for those who appreciate the beauty of flora. This weekend market is filled with the colors and scents of fresh flowers and plants. It's a great place to pick up a bouquet, a potted plant for your home, or simply to enjoy a leisurely stroll among the blooms.

We Recommend:: Besides the flowers, check out the adjacent Jade Market for a selection of beautiful jade jewelry and ornaments, which make for great souvenirs or gifts.

Guangzhou Street Night Market

Location: Guangzhou Street, Wanhua District, Taipei City
Type of Market: Night Market
Open: Daily, 4:00 PM - Midnight

Guangzhou Street Night Market is located in the historic Wanhua District and is known for its traditional Taiwanese snacks and dishes. This market has a more local feel and is less crowded than some of the more famous night markets, making it a good spot for a more relaxed evening.

We Recommend:: Sample the herbal pork rib soup (ba kut teh) for a warming and aromatic experience, or try the savory rice pudding (wa gui) for a taste of local comfort food.

Huaxi Street Night Market

Location: Huaxi Street, Wanhua District, Taipei City
Type of Market: Night Market
Open: Daily, 4:00 PM - Midnight

Also known as Snake Alley, Huaxi Street Night Market is a unique destination with a storied past. While the sale of snake-based delicacies has declined, the market still offers a variety of traditional foods and goods. It's a covered market, which makes it a good option for rainy days.

We Recommend:: For the adventurous, snake soup is a traditional dish to try. For something less exotic, the market also offers plenty of other Taiwanese specialties.

Dihua Street Market

Location: Dihua Street, Datong District, Taipei City
Type of Market: Traditional Market
Open: Daily, 10:00 AM - 7:00 PM

Dihua Street Market is a historic market street known for its Chinese New Year market, but it's a wonderful place to visit year-round. The street is lined with old shophouses selling traditional Chinese medicines, fabrics, teas, and more. It's a great place to experience Taipei's history and culture.

We Recommend:: Visit during the Lunar New Year preparations for an especially festive atmosphere, and don't miss the chance to try some of the high-quality Taiwanese teas on offer.

Ximending Shopping District

Location: Ximending, Wanhua District, Taipei City
Type of Market: Shopping District
Open: Daily, 11:00 AM - 10:00 PM

Ximending is often referred to as the "Harajuku of Taipei" and is a bustling shopping district popular with the younger crowd. It's not a traditional market, but its pedestrian streets are filled with shops, boutiques, and street food vendors, offering a modern market experience.

We Recommend:: Check out the trendy fashion boutiques for the latest styles, and be sure to try some of the creative street snacks, like the oversized chicken cutlets or bubble waffles.
