Summary: Learning how to get around using public transportation in Santander is an important step in adjusting to life in Santander. In this article, we cover the local public transportation options.

Santander is a beautiful coastal city known for its stunning beaches, historic architecture, and vibrant culture. One of the key aspects of life in Santander is its public transportation system. The city offers a variety of public transportation options, including buses, taxis, and bicycles, all of which are managed by the Santander City Council. The city's public transportation system is efficient, reliable, and affordable, making it possible for expats living in Santander to comfortably live without a car.

Buses

The primary mode of public transportation in Santander is the bus system, operated by the Municipal Transport Company of Santander (TUS). The TUS operates a network of bus routes that cover the entire city, making it easy to get from one place to another. The buses are clean, safe, and punctual, with services running from early morning until late at night. The cost of a single journey is €1.30, but there are also various passes available that offer unlimited travel for a certain period of time. For example, a monthly pass costs €30.00. The TUS also offers a night bus service on weekends, ensuring that residents can safely get home after a night out.

Taxis

Taxis are another popular mode of transportation in Santander. They are readily available throughout the city and can be hailed on the street or booked in advance. The taxis in Santander are metered, with the fare depending on the distance traveled. A typical fare for a short journey within the city center would be around €5-€10. Taxis are a safe and convenient option for those who prefer a more private mode of transportation, or for when the weather is not conducive to walking or cycling.

Bicycles

For those who prefer a more active mode of transportation, Santander offers a public bicycle sharing system called Tusbic. The system has over 30 stations located throughout the city, making it easy to pick up and drop off a bike. The bikes are well-maintained and come with a lock and helmet for safety. The cost of using Tusbic is €1.50 for a single journey, or €12.00 for a monthly pass. Cycling is a great way to explore the city and get some exercise at the same time. It's also a sustainable and environmentally friendly mode of transportation.

Walking

Finally, walking is a common and enjoyable way to get around Santander. The city is compact and pedestrian-friendly, with many of the main attractions located within walking distance of each other. There are also numerous parks and green spaces where residents can enjoy a leisurely stroll. Walking not only provides a free mode of transportation, but also allows residents to fully appreciate the beauty and charm of Santander.

In conclusion, the public transportation system in Santander is comprehensive and efficient, making it possible for residents to get around the city without the need for a car. Whether you prefer to take the bus, hail a taxi, ride a bike, or simply walk, Santander offers a variety of options to suit your needs.
