Summary: If you're moving to Uganda or recently arrived, it's important to know about the country's top hospitals for specific medical conditions. Here's a primer.

Uganda's healthcare system is a mix of public and private facilities, with the public sector providing a broad base of care and the private sector often offering more specialized services. While the public hospitals are generally more affordable, they may lack certain advanced technologies and specialized medical staff. Private hospitals, on the other hand, tend to have better facilities and more specialized practitioners, but at a higher cost. Expats, international retirees, and digital nomads living in Uganda may find that while the country has competent healthcare services for common ailments, they might prefer to travel back to their home countries for more complex medical conditions due to limited specialized hospitals or doctors. However, for many conditions, there are reputable hospitals in Uganda that provide quality care.

The Uganda Heart Institute in Kampala is the leading facility for heart surgery and treatment of chronic heart conditions. It is equipped with modern technology and staffed by specialized cardiologists and cardiothoracic surgeons. Another notable facility is the Aga Khan University Hospital, also in Kampala, which provides comprehensive cardiac care, including surgeries and rehabilitation services.

Kampala Hospital is another top choice for orthopedic care, providing surgeries for joint replacements, fractures, and sports injuries.

Top Hospitals in Uganda for Pediatric Care

Paediatric care is well catered for at the Cure Children's Hospital of Uganda in Mbale, which specializes in neurosurgery for children, including treatment for conditions like hydrocephalus and spina bifida. Mulago National Referral Hospital also has a comprehensive pediatric department that offers a wide range of services for children's health issues.

Specialized Hospitals for Other Conditions

For eye care, the Kampala Eye and Ear Hospital specializes in ophthalmology and otolaryngology, providing advanced treatments for eye and ear conditions. Expats and international residents in Uganda should consider health insurance that covers medical evacuation in case they require medical treatment that is not available in the country. It is also advisable to have a regular health check-up and maintain a relationship with a trusted general practitioner who can provide guidance on when and where to seek specialized medical care.
