Expat New York: Public Transportation Options
Summary: Expats living in the New York Metropolitan area have a variety of public transportation options. Learn about the rail and bus systems near your home - or where you will live.
Expats living in New York, New Jersey and Connecticut will find convenient public transportation throughout the tri-state area. Whether you live in the city or outside of it, there are generally options available for most people.
People using public transportation in the New York City area generally keep to themselves and don't expect conversation from people they don't know. Remember, it's considered impolite to stare in the United States, and this is important especially when using the New York City Subway, PATH Trains and Buses.
Public Transportation in the New York City Area
New York City has an excellent public transportation system, which is called The Metropolitan Transit Authority(MTA), and most people enjoy not having to have a car in the city. Parking garages are expensive and street parking can be hard to find.
The MTA operates New York City's bus and subway lines, Long Island Railroad and Metro North (between New York City and the northern suburbs of New York and Connecticut). Metro North Railroad runs into Grand Central Station, and Long Island Railroad runs into Penn Station. The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey operates the PATH Train (Port Authority Trans Hudson) that runs between points in New Jersey and Lower and Mid-Town Manhattan.
