Living in Morocco - Healthcare in Morocco

What is the quality of medical care in Morocco?

"Adequate medical care is available in Morocco's largest cities, particularly in Rabat and Casablanca, although not all facilities meet Western standards. Emergency and specialized care outside the major cities is far below U.S. standards and may not be available at all. Most medical staff will have limited or no English-speaking ability," wrote the US State Department.

Is Moroccan healthcare free?

Many people ask, "Is Moroccan healthcare free?" The Morocco healthcare system has both public and private layer. The public healthcare system is not of a standard that expats are used to and is not recommended. AMO is Morocco's Mandatory Health Insurance that is divided into public (La CNOPS), private (CNSS) and RAMED (low economic status health insurance).

Should I buy expat health insurance?

"Make sure your health insurance plan provides coverage overseas. Most care providers overseas only accept cash payments. You may also be required to pay a deposit before being admitted for treatment. See our webpage for more information on insurance providers for overseas coverage. We strongly recommend supplemental insurance to cover medical evacuation," advised the US Embassy in Morocco.

Most expats in Morocco opt to purchase private health insurance from an expat health insurance provider. Expats should look for plans that have good medical evacuation options should you need to be evacuated for life-saving or specialized medical treatment in the event of a medical emergency or serious illness.

Do I need medical evacuation insurance?

Yes! You need to have medical evacuation insurance in the event that you are in an accident or facing a life-threatening illness that would best be treated at a hospital outside of Morocco. Many of the better expat health insurance companies include evacuation insurance in their plans.

Are there ambulances in Morocco?

"In the event of vehicle accidents involving injuries, immediate ambulance service is usually not available. The police emergency services telephone number is '190'," explained the US State Department.

What vaccinations do I need for Morocco?

According to the CDC, expats in Morocco should have the following vaccinations: routine vaccinations (details), Hepatitis A, Hepatitis B, Measles, Rabies and Typhoid.

Are my medications available in Morocco?

According to the US State Department, "Most ordinary prescription and over-the-counter medicines are widely available. Specialized prescriptions may be difficult to fill and availability of all medicines in rural areas is unreliable."
