Summary: Establishing residency in Australia can be challenging. Here are some helpful tips for expats, retirees, and nomads.

Obtaining a residency visa in Australia is not always easy, but our Guide to Residency in Australia gives newcomers an overview of the steps involved and advice from others who have already navigated the process.

  • Research Visa Options
    • Visit the official Australian Department of Home Affairs website at immi.homeaffairs.gov.au to explore different visa options.
    • Identify the visa category that best suits your situation (e.g., skilled worker, family visa, student visa, etc.).
    • Check the eligibility requirements for the selected visa category.
  • Assess Your Eligibility
    • Complete the self-assessment or points test if required for your visa type.
    • Gather necessary documents such as proof of identity, qualifications, work experience, and English language proficiency.
  • Apply for a Visa
    • Create an account on the Australian Immigration online portal, known as ImmiAccount, at ImmiAccount Login.
    • Fill out the appropriate visa application form online.
    • Attach required documents, which may include passport scans, certificates, and reference letters.
    • Pay the visa application fee online.
    • Submit the application and wait for a confirmation of receipt.
  • Wait for a Decision
    • Processing times vary depending on the visa type; regularly check your email or ImmiAccount for updates.
    • Provide additional information if requested by the immigration authorities.
  • Undergo Health Examinations and Character Assessment
    • Complete any required health examinations by a panel physician approved by the Australian government.
    • Provide police certificates or other documents for a character assessment if required.
  • Receive Your Visa
    • If your application is successful, you will receive a visa grant notification with details about your visa, including grant number, validity period, and conditions.
  • Prepare for Your Move to Australia
    • Arrange your travel to Australia before your visa's "first entry date" expires.
    • Organize international shipping for your belongings if necessary.
  • Apply for a Tax File Number (TFN)
    • Visit the Australian Taxation Office (ATO) website at www.ato.gov.au to apply for a TFN.
    • Complete the online application form with your personal details and visa information.
    • Submit the form and wait for your TFN to be mailed to your Australian address.
  • Open an Australian Bank Account
    • Research banks and choose one that suits your needs.
    • Visit a local branch or apply online, providing your identification and visa details.
  • Understand Your Residency Status
    • Learn about your rights and responsibilities as a resident, including healthcare, taxation, and legal obligations.
    • Consider applying for permanent residency or citizenship in the future if eligible and desired.
Please note that immigration laws and processes can change, so it's important to consult the latest information from the official Australian Department of Home Affairs website or seek advice from a registered migration agent.

What tips do expats have about residency and visas in Australia?

"In order to visit, work, and/or reside in Australia, visitors need to obtain a visa. Depending on the purpose of the traveller’s visit - such as working, studying, retiring or joining family already in Australia - different types of visas can be applied for. Generally, a visa application will include documenting a valid passport, completing an application form and submitting supporting documents, such as proof of identity, a CV, and a letter of offer from an employer if relevant. Travellers may also need to provide evidence of payment of visa fees. To apply for a permanent residency visa in Australia, applicants must demonstrate that they meet certain criteria. They must have been granted an eligible visa and should have met their associated visa conditions. Additionally, they will need to meet health requirements, as well as a character test, and provide police checks from any country where they have lived for 12 months or more. Documentation such as identity documents, qualifications, evidence of English language ability, employment history and particulars of any family members who will accompany the applicant must also be provided. If the visa application is successful, permanent residency is then granted, and the applicant is able to make Australia their permanent or long-term home," commented one member living in Australia.
