Obtaining a residency visa in Azerbaijan is not always easy, but our Guide to Residency in Azerbaijan gives newcomers an overview of the steps involved and advice from others who have already navigated the process.

  • Research the types of residency permits available
    • Visit the official website of the State Migration Service of Azerbaijan at migration.gov.az to understand the different types of residency permits, such as temporary or permanent residency.
    • Choose the type of residency that best suits your purpose of stay, whether it's for work, study, family reunification, or other reasons.
  • Prepare the necessary documents
    • Passport with validity of at least 3 months beyond the residency permit duration.
    • Completed application form, which can be obtained from the State Migration Service website or their office.
    • Color photographs in the specified format.
    • Health insurance valid in Azerbaijan.
    • Proof of accommodation in Azerbaijan, such as a rental agreement or property deed.
    • Other documents depending on the residency permit type, such as employment contract, invitation letter from a university, or proof of family ties in Azerbaijan.
  • Apply for a Tax Number
    • Visit the Ministry of Taxes of the Republic of Azerbaijan website at taxes.gov.az to learn about the tax number application process.
    • Go to the nearest tax office with your passport and fill out the application form for a tax identification number (TIN).
    • Submit the form and wait for your TIN to be issued, which is usually a quick process.
  • Submit your residency permit application
    • Go to the regional office of the State Migration Service or apply online through their official website.
    • Provide all the prepared documents along with your tax identification number.
    • Pay the state fee for processing your residency permit application.
  • Attend an interview or appointment, if required
    • Be prepared to attend an interview at the State Migration Service office to discuss your application.
    • Answer questions regarding your stay and intentions in Azerbaijan honestly and accurately.
  • Wait for the decision
    • Residency permit processing times can vary, so be prepared to wait for the decision, which can take several weeks or months.
    • Check the status of your application online if you applied through the State Migration Service website.
  • Collect your residency permit
    • If your application is approved, you will be notified to collect your residency permit card.
    • Visit the designated State Migration Service office with your passport to collect your card.
  • Register your place of residence
    • Within 10 days of receiving your residency permit, you must register your place of residence with the local executive authorities or through the State Migration Service.
    • Provide proof of your address, such as a rental agreement or a utility bill.
  • Renew your residency permit as needed
    • Keep track of the expiration date of your residency permit and apply for renewal in advance, typically 30 days before it expires.
    • Follow the same process as the initial application, updating any documents as necessary.
Please note that the above steps are a general guide and the specific requirements may vary depending on the individual circumstances and changes in the law. It is always recommended to check the latest information from the official sources or consult with a legal expert specializing in Azerbaijani immigration law.

What tips do expats have about residency and visas in Azerbaijan?

"For those wishing to visit Azerbaijan, they can apply for a visa at an Azerbaijan Embassy. The first step of the process is to fill out the visa application, detailing the purpose and duration of travel. Along with the application, a passport, a passport-size photograph, and all documents related to the visit must be provided, such as an invitation letter, hotel booking confirmation, and proof of the financial means to cover the expenses. Depending on the purpose, additional documents may be requested. For those wishing to apply for a longer residency in Azerbaijan, the application must be lodged in the local passport and visa department of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Azerbaijan. Documents necessary for the application include proof of income and tax information, a background check, a medical certificate, and proof of housing. After the documents have been submitted and thoroughly reviewed, a residence permit and card will be issued," commented one member living in Azerbaijan.
