Obtaining a residency visa in Ghana is not always easy, but our Guide to Residency in Ghana gives newcomers an overview of the steps involved and advice from others who have already navigated the process.

  • Research Ghanaian Immigration Laws
    • Visit the Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) website for up-to-date information on residency requirements: GIS Website.
    • Understand the different types of residency permits available, such as work and study permits, and determine which one applies to your situation.
  • Secure a Valid Passport
    • Ensure your passport is valid for at least six months beyond your intended stay in Ghana.
    • If you need a new passport or to renew your existing one, contact your home country's passport office.
  • Obtain the Necessary Visa
    • Apply for a Ghanaian visa that corresponds with your reason for moving, such as a work or business visa.
    • Visit the nearest Ghanaian embassy or consulate, or check their website for visa application procedures.
  • Enter Ghana
    • Travel to Ghana with your valid passport and the appropriate visa.
    • Keep all travel documents and receipts, as they may be required for your residency application.
  • Apply for a Tax Identification Number (TIN)
    • Visit the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) website for information on obtaining a TIN: GRA Website.
    • Complete the TIN registration form, which can be downloaded from the GRA website or obtained at their offices.
    • Submit the form along with any required documents, such as your passport and visa, to the nearest GRA office.
  • Open a Local Bank Account
    • Choose a reputable bank in Ghana.
    • Visit the bank in person with your passport, visa, and TIN to open an account.
    • Deposit the minimum required amount as per the bank's policy.
  • Find Accommodation
    • Secure a place to live, whether through renting or purchasing property.
    • Ensure you have a formal lease or purchase agreement, as this will be needed for your residency application.
  • Apply for Residency Status
    • Visit the GIS office or their website to obtain the residency application form.
    • Complete the application form and gather all required supporting documents, such as:
      • Passport-sized photographs
      • Valid passport and visa
      • Proof of accommodation in Ghana
      • Employment contract or business incorporation documents (if applicable)
      • Medical examination report from an accredited clinic in Ghana
      • Police clearance certificate from your home country
      • Receipts of payment for the processing fees
    • Submit the completed application form and supporting documents to the GIS office.
    • Pay the required processing fees.
  • Attend an Interview (if required)
    • Be prepared to attend an interview with immigration officials to discuss your application.
    • Answer all questions truthfully and provide any additional information they may request.
  • Wait for Approval
    • After submitting your application, there will be a processing period during which your application is reviewed.
    • Keep track of your application status by contacting the GIS office or checking online if such a service is available.
  • Receive Residency Permit
    • Once your application is approved, you will be notified to collect your residency permit.
    • Go to the GIS office with your identification to collect the permit.
  • Maintain Residency Status
    • Adhere to all the conditions of your residency, such as not engaging in unauthorized work.
    • Renew your residency permit as required, typically every one to two years.
