Summary: Gain insight into the health care system in Cameroon. Explore its accessibility and limitations for expatriates, remote workers, retirees, and others who choose to live in Cameroon.

Cameroon has a public and private healthcare system, with both offering quality medical care. The public healthcare system is called the Cameroonian National Health System and is available to all citizens and foreigners. Expats and digital nomads are allowed to use the public healthcare system, however, most opt for private healthcare due to the long wait times and lack of resources in public hospitals. Public hospitals are not recommended for serious medical emergencies or major surgery, as they are often overcrowded and lack the necessary equipment.

Cameroon's Public Healthcare System

Cameroon's public healthcare system is funded by the government and is available to all citizens and foreigners. The public healthcare system is free for citizens, however, foreigners are required to pay a fee for medical services. Public hospitals are often overcrowded and lack the necessary equipment, so they are not recommended for serious medical emergencies or major surgery.

Cameroon's Private Healthcare System

Cameroon's private healthcare system is funded by private companies and individuals. Private healthcare is more expensive than public healthcare, but it is often more reliable and offers better quality care. Expats and digital nomads typically use private hospitals for serious medical emergencies and major surgery, as they are better equipped and have shorter wait times.

Cameroon's Top Hospitals

Cameroon has several top hospitals, both public and private, that offer quality medical care. Some of the most well-known hospitals include:

  • Yaounde Central Hospital (public) - Yaounde
  • Laquintinie Hospital (public) - Douala
  • Bamenda Regional Hospital (public) - Bamenda
  • St. Elizabeth Hospital (private) - Douala
  • Clinique des Grands Lacs (private) - Douala
  • Clinique Bonnevie (private) - Yaounde
  • Clinique du Cinquantenaire (private) - Yaounde

Health Insurance Companies in Cameroon

The most popular private health insurers in Cameroon are AXA, Allianz, and Generali. Expats and digital nomads typically use these companies, as they offer comprehensive coverage and competitive rates. Expats may also opt for specialized expat health insurance providers, however, these are not as widely used in Cameroon.

Insider Tips from Expats in Cameroon: How to Navigate the Health System

"Cameroon has a public health system that provides basic medical services to its citizens. The country also has a number of private hospitals and clinics that offer more specialized care. The quality of medical services in Cameroon varies depending on the region and the type of facility. In general, the public health system is underfunded and understaffed, leading to long wait times and limited access to specialized care. However, the private sector is growing and providing more options for those who can afford it," commented one member living in Cameroon.

"Cameroon offers a variety of healthcare services, including primary care, hospital care, and specialized care. The public healthcare system in Cameroon is largely funded by the government and is available to all citizens. However, the quality of public healthcare is generally considered to be inadequate, with limited access to medical supplies and equipment, and a shortage of qualified medical personnel. Foreign residents may have access to the public healthcare system, but it is not always guaranteed. Expats in Cameroon may use the public healthcare system, but they may also opt to use private healthcare services, which are often of a higher quality," commented one member living in Cameroon.
