Summary: Learn about the health system in Madagascar: how it can and cannot be used by expats, nomads, retirees and others moving to and living in Madagascar.

Madagascar has a public and private healthcare system, with both offering varying levels of care. The public healthcare system is called the National Health System of Madagascar (SNM). Foreigners (expats and digital nomads) are allowed to use the public healthcare system in Madagascar, however, it is not typically used by foreigners. Public hospitals are not recommended for serious medical emergencies and major surgery, as the quality of care is not as high as private hospitals. Public hospitals in Madagascar are often overcrowded and lack the necessary resources to provide quality care.

Madagascar's Private Healthcare System

Private healthcare in Madagascar is more expensive than public healthcare, but the quality of care is much higher. Expats primarily use private hospitals, as they are more reliable and offer better care. Private hospitals are recommended for serious medical emergencies and major surgery, as they are better equipped and have more resources. Private hospitals in Madagascar are typically cleaner and more modern than public hospitals.

Insider Tips from Expats in Madagascar: How to Navigate the Health System

"Medical services in Madagascar are limited and often inadequate. The country has a shortage of medical personnel, and many of the existing medical facilities are poorly equipped and lack basic supplies. The majority of the population relies on traditional healers for medical care, and access to modern medical care is limited to those who can afford it. The government has made efforts to improve access to healthcare, but the country still faces many challenges in providing adequate medical services," commented one member living in Madagascar.

"Healthcare services in Madagascar are provided by both public and private institutions. The public healthcare system is largely underfunded and understaffed, resulting in limited access to quality healthcare services. The quality of public healthcare is generally poor, with inadequate medical supplies and equipment, and limited access to specialized care. Foreign residents do have access to the public healthcare system, but the quality of care is not always reliable. Expats in Madagascar often opt to use private healthcare services, which are more expensive but offer better quality care," commented one member living in Madagascar.
