Summary: Health Care in Bogota: Locate providers, hospitals, and medical centers to find the best health services available for expats and nomads.

Bogota has a healthcare system that consists of both public and private sectors. The public healthcare system, known as the General System of Social Security in Health (SGSSS), provides coverage to citizens and residents, while private hospitals and clinics offer additional options for those seeking medical care.

Colombia's Healthcare System

Colombia's public healthcare system, the General System of Social Security in Health (SGSSS), is available to citizens, residents, and foreigners with a valid visa. Public hospitals in Bogota are generally not recommended for serious medical emergencies or major surgeries, as they can be overcrowded and have limited resources. Public hospitals in Bogota may not provide the same level of comfort and service as private hospitals. Foreigners, including expats and digital nomads, are allowed to use the public healthcare system in Colombia, but many choose to use private hospitals for their medical needs. Private hospitals in Bogota are generally recommended for serious medical emergencies and major surgeries, as they offer better facilities, equipment, and staff.

Hospitals and Clinics for Expats in Bogota

Some recommended hospitals and clinics in Bogota for expats include:

  • Fundación Santa Fe de Bogotá (private) - Located in the north of the city, this hospital is known for its high-quality care and modern facilities.
  • Clínica del Country (private) - Also located in the north of the city, this hospital specializes in cardiology and neurology.
  • Clínica Marly (private) - Located in the Chapinero neighborhood, this hospital offers a wide range of medical services.
  • Hospital Universitario San Ignacio (public) - Located in the city center, this teaching hospital is affiliated with the Pontificia Universidad Javeriana.

Emergency Services in Bogota

There are ambulance services in Bogota, which can be called by dialing 123. However, response times can vary depending on traffic and other factors. In some cases, it may be faster to take a taxi or private car to the nearest hospital in case of an emergency.

Health Insurance Companies in Bogota

Some popular private health insurance companies in Bogota include Colpatria, Sura, and Allianz. These companies offer various plans and coverage options for individuals and families. Expats and digital nomads may choose to use these local insurance providers or opt for specialized expat health insurance providers, depending on their needs and preferences.
