Summary: Explore healthcare options for expatriates and digital nomads in Kathmandu: uncover top-rated providers, hospitals, and medical facilities to meet your needs while living abroad in Kathmandu.

Kathmandu has a public and private healthcare system. The public healthcare system is called the Nepal Health Care System (NHCS). It is used by both locals and foreigners, however, it is not recommended for serious medical emergencies or major surgery. Public hospitals in Kathmandu are often overcrowded and understaffed, and the quality of care is not always up to the standards of private hospitals. Foreigners are allowed to use the public healthcare system in Nepal, but most expats and digital nomads prefer to use private hospitals for their medical needs.

Hospitals and Clinics for Expats in Kathmandu

For expats and digital nomads in Kathmandu, there are several recommended clinics and hospitals. These include:

  • Kathmandu Model Hospital (private) - located in Thapathali
  • Kathmandu Medical College Teaching Hospital (private) - located in Sinamangal
  • Kathmandu Medical College (private) - located in Sinamangal
  • Kathmandu Valley Hospital (private) - located in Thapathali
  • Kathmandu Eye Hospital (private) - located in Thapathali
  • Kathmandu Orthopedic Hospital (private) - located in Thapathali

For more specialized medical care and surgeries, expats in Kathmandu often go to hospitals in India, such as the Apollo Hospital in New Delhi, which is about a 5-hour drive from Kathmandu.

Emergency Services in Kathmandu

Kathmandu has several ambulance services, including the Nepal Ambulance Service and the Nepal Red Cross Society. To call for an ambulance, you can dial 102 or 103. Ambulances usually arrive quickly, but there can be delays due to traffic or other factors.

Health Insurance Companies in Kathmandu

The most popular private health insurers in Kathmandu are Citizen Health Insurance, Prudential Insurance, and Himalayan General Insurance. Expats and digital nomads typically use these companies, rather than specialized expat health insurance providers.
