Ashgabat

Urban

Ashgabat is the capital and the largest city of Turkmenistan, renowned for its grandiose architecture and wide, marble-clad boulevards. The city is a unique blend of Soviet-era structures and modern, often record-breaking buildings, such as having the highest density of white marble-clad buildings in the world. Ashgabat is a showcase city, with its impressive monuments, parks, and government buildings, which are designed to impress visitors and reflect the country's wealth from natural gas reserves. The city's layout is spacious, with large distances between buildings and a meticulously planned road network. At night, the city lights up with colorful LED displays on its many fountains and buildings, creating a striking visual effect. Despite its modern appearance, Ashgabat also has a rich cultural scene, with museums like the Turkmen Carpet Museum and the National Museum of Turkmenistan, which offer insights into the country's history and art. The city hosts several markets, including the Tolkuchka Bazaar, where traditional crafts and carpets can be purchased. However, the city's grandeur can sometimes feel superficial, as it contrasts sharply with the more modest living conditions in other parts of the country. Ashgabat remains a fascinating destination for those interested in Central Asian politics, architecture, and culture.
