Bernardsville

Suburban

The Borough of Bernardsville is nestled in the rolling hills of Somerset County, New Jersey. It is part of the Somerset Hills group of communities, which also includes Basking Ridge, Bedminster, Far Hills, and Peapack and Gladstone. Despite its small-town feel, Bernardsville offers convenient access to New York City via train, making it a desirable location for commuters.

With its tree-lined streets, historic estates on the "Bernardsville Mountain" and a quaint downtown area with a mix of boutiques and essential shopping options, Bernardsville attracts those seeking a peaceful suburban lifestyle with a touch of sophistication and rural charm. Bernardsville has about 12.9 square miles of land.

The train station, the Bernards Inn, the Olcott Building at Bernards High School, and Bernardsville Cinema are just a few of the local landmarks that help define Bernardsville's unique country charm. The Bernardsville Public Library is a beautiful facility and widely used by residents, and anyone who appreciates small, independent bookstores will love the Bookworm.

Residents enjoy a variety of outdoor activities, such as public tennis and pickleball courts, and a well-regarded public pool in the summer. A variety of golf and tennis clubs are widely available in the area. Nearby trails for hiking are plentiful in places like Natirar County Park, Jockey Hollow, Hacklebarney State Park, and the Great Swamp Wildlife Refuge.

As with many other towns in the area, the history of Bernardsville is fascinating and has ties to the early 1700s and the Revolutionary War. At the time, it was an unincorporated village known as Vealtown that was part of Bernards Township. Continental Army troops were hosted at the the John Parker Tavern (now known as the Old Library Building). The construction of the Bernardsville Train Station and arrival of the train line to Bernardsville in the late 1800s connected it to New York City.
