Belize City is the largest city in Belize and was once the capital of the former British Honduras. As the nation's main port, the city is a hub of commercial and cultural activity. It is situated at the mouth of the Belize River on the coast of the Caribbean Sea and is the country's principal economic and historical area. Belize City is characterized by its colonial architecture, historical landmarks, and vibrant street life. The Swing Bridge, a manually operated bridge, and St. John's Cathedral, the oldest Anglican Church in Central America, are notable landmarks. The city's streets are lined with a mix of old and new buildings, reflecting its history and growth. Belize City serves as a gateway to the rest of Belize, with boats and tours departing for the cayes and the barrier reef, which offer excellent opportunities for diving and snorkeling. The city itself has a bustling market, numerous shops, and a variety of restaurants serving local and international cuisine. Despite its attractions, Belize City is also known for its urban challenges and is less tourist-oriented compared to other parts of the country. Visitors often use it as a transit point to other destinations within Belize.
