Summary: Living it Up in Hakone: Your Insider's Guide to Top Attractions, Culinary Hotspots, Nightlife, and More. Discover the Best Recreational Activities, Connect with Friendly Locals, and Experience the Charm of the City.

Welcome to Hakone! If you're planning to move to Hakone, congratulations on taking the first step towards a new adventure. While there are many things to think about before you leave, such as visas, housing, and transportation, it's important to remember that once you arrive, the fun really begins. In this article, we'll introduce you to some of the best sites, restaurants, and nightlife that Hakone has to offer, as well as provide tips on recreational activities and making friends in Hakone.

Hakone is a mountainous town known for its hot springs resorts (onsen) and views of the iconic volcano, Mount Fuji. One of the most popular attractions is the Hakone Open-Air Museum, which features sculptures by Picasso, Henry Moore, and many other artists, set against beautiful mountain scenery. The Hakone Shrine, a Shinto shrine with a history of over 1,200 years, is another must-visit site. It is located on the shores of Lake Ashi and is known for its large red torii gate that stands in the lake. The Hakone Ropeway, a cable car ride that offers stunning views of Mount Fuji and the surrounding area, is another popular attraction. The Hakone Tozan Railway, Japan's oldest mountain railway, is also a unique experience, offering scenic views of the surrounding valleys.

For those interested in history and culture, the Hakone Checkpoint Museum offers a glimpse into the Edo period, while the Pola Museum of Art houses a vast collection of Western art. The Hakone Gora Park, a Western-style park with a beautiful rose garden, teahouses, and a craft house where visitors can try their hand at glass blowing and pottery, is also worth a visit.

The restaurant and nightlife scene in Hakone is a blend of traditional and modern. The region is known for its kaiseki ryori (traditional multi-course meal) and local specialties like Hakone tofu and soba noodles. One of the most popular restaurants is Hakone Soba, known for its handmade soba noodles. Gora Brewery & Grill, a restaurant and craft beer brewery, offers a modern dining experience with a menu that includes both Japanese and Western dishes. For a unique dining experience, visitors can try Tamura Ginkatsutei, a restaurant that specializes in tonkatsu (breaded and deep-fried pork cutlet).

As for nightlife, Hakone isn't known for its bustling night scene like Tokyo or Osaka. However, there are a few bars and pubs where visitors can unwind after a day of sightseeing. The Hakone Brewery, located near Lake Ashi, offers a variety of craft beers, while the Gora Brewery & Grill, mentioned earlier, is also a popular spot for a night out. The Ajisai Lounge, located in the Hyatt Regency, offers a more upscale experience with its selection of cocktails and whiskies.

Recreational activities in Hakone are centered around its natural beauty and cultural heritage. Hiking is a popular activity, with trails leading to various attractions such as the Hakone Shrine and the volcanic valley of Owakudani. The Hakone Tozan Railway and Hakone Ropeway are also popular for sightseeing. For those interested in water activities, Lake Ashi offers boat tours and fishing. The Hakone Kowakien Yunessun is a hot springs theme park with a variety of baths, including a wine bath and a coffee bath, offering a unique onsen experience.

For a more relaxed experience, visitors can enjoy a round of golf at the Hakone Country Club or visit one of the many onsens for a soak in the hot springs. The Hakone Gora Park also offers craft workshops where visitors can try their hand at pottery, glass blowing, and other crafts.
