Summary: Learn about the health system in Enoshima: how it can and cannot be used by expats, nomads, retirees and others moving to and living in Enoshima.

Enoshima, a small island in Japan, is part of a country known for its efficient and high-quality healthcare system. The healthcare system in Japan is a mix of public and private institutions, providing comprehensive coverage to all residents, including foreigners.

Japan's Healthcare System

The public healthcare system in Japan is known as the National Health Insurance (NHI). It is a universal healthcare system that covers all residents, including foreigners who have been in the country for more than a year. Public hospitals in Enoshima, like elsewhere in Japan, are well-equipped and staffed with highly trained medical professionals. They are capable of handling serious medical emergencies and major surgeries. However, language can be a barrier as not all staff may be fluent in English. On the other hand, private hospitals often have English-speaking staff and offer a higher level of comfort and privacy. Expats and digital nomads are allowed to use both public and private healthcare systems in Japan. While some expats may prefer private hospitals for their convenience and comfort, others may choose public hospitals for their affordability and high standard of care.

Hospitals and Clinics for Expats in Enoshima

Enoshima, being a small island, does not have many hospitals. However, there are several medical facilities in the nearby city of Fujisawa, such as:

  • Fujisawa City Hospital (Public) - A comprehensive medical facility offering a wide range of services.
  • Shonan Kamakura General Hospital (Private) - Known for its advanced medical technology and English-speaking staff.
  • Enoshima Island Spa (Private) - While not a hospital, this facility offers wellness and preventive care services.
In case of emergencies or need for specialized care, expats often go to larger hospitals in Tokyo, which is approximately an hour's drive from Enoshima.

Emergency Services in Enoshima

Emergency services are available in Enoshima. In case of an emergency, one can dial 119 to call for an ambulance. The response time is generally quick, but it can vary depending on the location and time of the call. It's important to note that while some operators may speak English, it's not guaranteed.

Health Insurance Companies in Enoshima

Most residents in Enoshima, including expats and digital nomads, are covered by the National Health Insurance. However, some may choose to supplement it with private health insurance. Major private health insurance companies in Japan include T&D Life Group and Dai-ichi Life. These companies offer a variety of plans with different coverage options. While some expats and digital nomads may choose to use these local companies, others may prefer international health insurance providers that cater specifically to the needs of expats.
