Summary: Here's a primer on how to get your driver's license in Portugal.

Sometimes when you're new to a country a task like getting your driver's license can make you feel like you're 16 years old again trying to pass your driver's test. Here's an overview of the process of getting your driver's license in Portugal.

In Portugal, foreigners are allowed to drive if they hold a valid international driving permit (IDP) along with their valid home country driving license. The IDP is valid for one year. If the foreigner becomes a resident in Portugal, they can use their home country license for up to two years. However, after two years of residency, they must convert their home country license to a Portuguese driving license.

For EU citizens, they can drive in Portugal with their home country license until it expires. After that, they will need to exchange it for a Portuguese license. It's important to note that some countries have a driving license agreement with Portugal, which allows for a simple exchange of the home country license for a Portuguese one. However, other countries may require the driver to take a driving test in Portugal.

There are no specific requirements that differ based on the city, state, or region in Portugal. The rules for driving are country-wide. However, it's always a good idea to familiarize oneself with the local traffic rules and regulations, as well as the road signs in Portugal, to ensure safe and legal driving.
