How to Get a Driver's License in Denmark
Summary: Here's a primer on how to get your driver's license in Denmark.
Sometimes when you're new to a country a task like getting your driver's license can make you feel like you're 16 years old again trying to pass your driver's test. Here's an overview of the process of getting your driver's license in Denmark.
In Denmark, the requirements for a foreigner to legally drive depend on their country of origin. If you are from an EU/EEA country, you can use your valid driving license for as long as it remains valid. If you are from outside the EU/EEA, you can use your foreign driving license for up to 90 days after you establish residence in Denmark. After this period, you must exchange your foreign driving license for a Danish one. This usually involves passing a theory and practical driving test.
Additionally, if your driving license is issued in English, German, French, Spanish, Swedish, or Norwegian, you do not need an international driving permit. However, if it is issued in another language, you should carry an international driving permit or a translation into Danish, English or French.
It's important to note that the rules are the same throughout Denmark and do not differ based on the city, state, or region in which you live. However, if you are a student or intern and your stay in Denmark is temporary (less than one year), you may use your foreign driving license throughout the entire period without exchanging it.
