Summary: Here's a primer on how to get your driver's license in Ethiopia.

Sometimes when you're new to a country a task like getting your driver's license can make you feel like you're 16 years old again trying to pass your driver's test. Here's an overview of the process of getting your driver's license in Ethiopia.

In Ethiopia, foreigners who wish to drive legally must have a valid international driving permit (IDP) along with their valid home country driving license. The IDP must be obtained in the driver's home country before traveling to Ethiopia. It's also important to note that the driving license must be in English or translated into English to be valid in Ethiopia.

Additionally, if a foreigner is staying in Ethiopia for a long period and has a residence permit, they may be required to obtain an Ethiopian driving license. This involves a written and practical driving test. The process can be facilitated through the Ethiopian Road Transport Authority.

As far as regional differences are concerned, the driving rules and regulations in Ethiopia are generally consistent across the entire country. However, road conditions can vary significantly between urban and rural areas, and drivers should be prepared for this. It's also worth noting that driving in Ethiopia can be challenging due to factors such as heavy traffic, poor road conditions, and different driving habits.
