Getting a Driver's License in Hungary
Summary: Here's a primer on how to get your driver's license in Hungary.
Sometimes when you're new to a country a task like getting your driver's license can make you feel like you're 16 years old again trying to pass your driver's test. Here's an overview of the process of getting your driver's license in Hungary.
In Hungary, foreigners are allowed to drive if they have a valid driving license from their home country along with an International Driving Permit (IDP). The IDP is a translation of your license and must be obtained in your home country before you travel. It's important to note that the IDP is not a standalone document and must be accompanied by your valid national driving license at all times.
For EU citizens, a driving license issued in any EU country is valid in Hungary. Non-EU citizens can use their home country's driving license for up to one year, but after that, they are required to obtain a Hungarian driving license. To get a Hungarian driving license, one must pass a theory test and a practical driving test, both of which are conducted in Hungarian. Some driving schools offer courses in English or German.
As for insurance, it is mandatory to have third-party liability insurance in Hungary. If you're bringing your own car, make sure your insurance covers Hungary. If you're renting a car, the rental company will provide the necessary insurance.
There are no specific requirements that differ based on the city, state, or region in Hungary. However, it's important to be aware of the local traffic rules and regulations, which apply throughout the country. For example, the use of seat belts is mandatory, and the legal blood alcohol level is zero for drivers.
