How to Get a Driver's License in India
Summary: Here's a primer on how to get your driver's license in India.
Sometimes when you're new to a country a task like getting your driver's license can make you feel like you're 16 years old again trying to pass your driver's test. Here's an overview of the process of getting your driver's license in India.
Foreigners who wish to drive in India must have a valid international driving permit (IDP) along with their domestic driving license. The IDP is valid for one year from the date of issue, after which foreigners are required to apply for an Indian driving license. The IDP must be issued in the home country before travelling to India. It is also important to note that the vehicle category must match the category mentioned in the driving license.
Additionally, the driver must be at least 18 years old and should always carry both the IDP and the domestic license when driving. The driver should also adhere to the traffic rules and regulations in India. Failure to comply with these rules can result in fines or legal action.
As for regional differences, the basic requirements for a foreigner to drive in India are the same across all states. However, traffic rules and regulations may vary slightly from state to state. For instance, some states may have stricter rules regarding the use of mobile phones while driving or regarding seat belt use. Therefore, it is advisable for foreigners to familiarize themselves with the local traffic rules of the state they are in.
