Summary: Here's a primer on how to get your driver's license in Luxembourg.

Sometimes when you're new to a country a task like getting your driver's license can make you feel like you're 16 years old again trying to pass your driver's test. Here's an overview of the process of getting your driver's license in Luxembourg.

In Luxembourg, foreigners are allowed to drive using their domestic driving license for the first six months of their stay. After this period, they are required to exchange their license for a Luxembourgish one. This rule applies to non-European Union (EU) citizens. For EU citizens, their domestic license remains valid until its expiration date. However, if the license is lost, stolen, or damaged, it must be replaced by a Luxembourgish license.

Foreigners from non-EU countries who hold a driving license that is not in German, French, or English must have an International Driving Permit (IDP) in addition to their domestic driving license. The IDP serves as a translation of the domestic license and is valid for one year. After one year, non-EU citizens must obtain a Luxembourgish driving license.

It's important to note that the requirements for driving in Luxembourg do not vary by city, state, or region. The rules are country-wide and apply to all areas within Luxembourg. However, the process and requirements for exchanging a foreign driving license for a Luxembourgish one may vary depending on the country where the original license was issued.
