Getting a Driver's License in Moldova
Summary: Here's a primer on how to get your driver's license in Moldova.
Sometimes when you're new to a country a task like getting your driver's license can make you feel like you're 16 years old again trying to pass your driver's test. Here's an overview of the process of getting your driver's license in Moldova.
Foreigners who wish to drive in Moldova must have a valid international driving permit (IDP) along with their valid national driving license. The IDP is a translation of your national driving license and it must be obtained in your home country before you travel to Moldova. It's also recommended to have car insurance that covers Moldova. If you are planning to stay in Moldova for more than 90 days, you should apply for a Moldovan driving license.
As for the vehicle, it must meet the technical requirements of the Moldovan legislation. The vehicle must be registered and have a valid technical inspection certificate. If the vehicle is not owned by the driver, a power of attorney from the owner is required.
It's important to note that the traffic rules in Moldova are strict and the penalties for violations can be severe. Driving under the influence of alcohol is strictly prohibited and is punishable by heavy fines, suspension of driving license, and even imprisonment.
There are no different requirements based on the city, state, or region in Moldova. The same rules apply throughout the entire country.
