Summary: Here's a primer on how to get your driver's license in Sri Lanka.

Sometimes when you're new to a country a task like getting your driver's license can make you feel like you're 16 years old again trying to pass your driver's test. Here's an overview of the process of getting your driver's license in Sri Lanka.

Foreigners who wish to drive in Sri Lanka must have an International Driving Permit (IDP) along with their valid foreign driving license. The IDP must be obtained from the country where the driving license was issued. If a foreigner is staying in Sri Lanka for more than 12 months, they are required to obtain a Sri Lankan driving license. This involves passing a driving test in Sri Lanka.

Additionally, foreigners can also apply for a temporary Sri Lankan driving license, which is valid for three months. This can be obtained from the Department of Motor Traffic in Sri Lanka by presenting a valid foreign driving license along with a completed application form.

It's important to note that driving in Sri Lanka is on the left-hand side of the road, and the driver's seat is on the right-hand side of the vehicle. The legal driving age in Sri Lanka is 18 years.

As far as regional differences are concerned, the driving rules and regulations are generally consistent throughout the country. However, traffic conditions may vary depending on the city or region. For instance, traffic in cities like Colombo can be quite heavy, especially during peak hours, while rural areas may have less traffic but potentially more challenging road conditions.
