How to Get a Driver's License in Uganda

Summary: Here's a primer on how to get your driver's license in Uganda.

Sometimes when you're new to a country a task like getting your driver's license can make you feel like you're 16 years old again trying to pass your driver's test. Here's an overview of the process of getting your driver's license in Uganda.

In Uganda, foreigners who wish to drive legally must have a valid international driving permit (IDP) along with their valid home country driving license. The IDP must be issued by the same country that issued their original driving license. The driving license must be in English or translated into English. If a foreigner plans to stay in Uganda for more than a year, they are required to apply for a Ugandan driving license.

It's important to note that Uganda drives on the left-hand side of the road, which may be different from what some foreigners are used to. Also, the minimum driving age in Uganda is 18 years old. Foreigners should also be aware of the local traffic rules and regulations to ensure safety and avoid legal issues.

As far as regional differences within Uganda, the requirements for a foreigner to drive legally do not change. The same rules apply whether you are in the capital city of Kampala or in any other region of the country. However, road conditions and driving customs can vary, so it's important to be aware and adapt to local conditions.
