Summary: Driving in a new country can be daunting. These tips offer insight into what to expect when driving in Central.

1. Consider Public Transportation Instead

Driving in Central can be quite challenging due to the heavy traffic, narrow roads, and complex road systems. The public transportation system in Hong Kong is highly efficient, reliable, and covers most areas of the city. It includes the MTR (Mass Transit Railway), buses, trams, and ferries. Many expats and locals prefer using public transportation or walking instead of driving.

2. Car Recommendation

If you still prefer to drive, a smaller car is recommended due to the narrow roads and limited parking spaces. Electric cars are also becoming more popular in Hong Kong due to the government's efforts to promote green transportation.

3. Parking Difficulty and Cost

Finding parking in Central, Hong Kong can be quite difficult, especially during peak hours. Parking spaces are limited and can be quite expensive. The cost can vary depending on the location and time, but it can range from HKD 20 to HKD 60 per hour.

4. Driving with an International License

Foreigners can drive in Hong Kong with an international driving permit (IDP) or a foreign driving license for up to 12 months. However, if you are planning to stay in Hong Kong for more than 12 months, you will need to apply for a Hong Kong driving license.

5. Getting a Hong Kong Driving License

To get a Hong Kong driving license, you will need to pass a driving test or apply for direct issue of a full Hong Kong driving license if your home country has an exchange agreement with Hong Kong. The application can be done at any licensing offices of the Transport Department. You will need to provide your IDP or foreign driving license, proof of residence in the country that issued your license, and a completed application form.

6. Driving Etiquette

Driving in Hong Kong is on the left-hand side of the road. Seat belts are mandatory for all passengers, and using a mobile phone while driving is prohibited unless you have a hands-free device. Be aware that Hong Kong drivers can be aggressive and often do not signal when changing lanes.

7. Car Insurance

Car insurance is mandatory in Hong Kong. You should ensure that you have adequate coverage before you start driving. The cost of car insurance can vary depending on the type of coverage, the value of the car, and the driver's experience and age.
