Summary: Driving in a new country can be daunting. These tips offer insight into what to expect when driving in Rovaniemi.

1. Understanding the Driving Conditions

Driving in Rovaniemi, can be a unique experience, especially during the winter months. The city is located in the Arctic Circle, which means it experiences extreme weather conditions. The roads can be icy and slippery, and there is often heavy snowfall. Therefore, it's essential to be prepared for these conditions and drive cautiously. The summer months offer more comfortable driving conditions, with long daylight hours and well-maintained roads.

2. Choosing the Right Car

Given the harsh winter conditions, a four-wheel-drive vehicle is highly recommended. Cars with good winter tires are a must for safe driving. Many locals also recommend having a car with a block heater, which can help start your car in extremely cold temperatures.

3. Parking in Rovaniemi

Finding parking in Rovaniemi is generally not a problem. There are plenty of parking spaces available in the city center and residential areas. However, during peak tourist season, parking can be a bit more challenging. Parking fees vary depending on the location, but they are generally affordable.

4. Driving with an International License

Foreigners can drive in Finland with an international driving permit (IDP) along with their valid national driving license. The IDP is valid for one year. After that, if you plan to stay in Finland, you will need to obtain a Finnish driving license.

5. Obtaining a Finnish Driving License

If you are moving to Finland and plan to stay for more than a year, you will need to exchange your foreign driving license for a Finnish one. This process involves a theory test and a driving test. The tests are available in English. It's recommended to take a few driving lessons to familiarize yourself with the Finnish driving rules and conditions.

6. Familiarize Yourself with Local Traffic Rules

Finland has strict traffic rules, and they are rigorously enforced. Speed limits are lower than in many other countries, especially during winter. Seat belts are mandatory for all passengers, and the use of mobile phones while driving is prohibited unless you use a hands-free device. Also, remember that in Finland, you must always keep your headlights on, regardless of the time of day or weather conditions.

7. Be Prepared for Wildlife

One unique aspect of driving in Rovaniemi and other parts of Lapland is the possibility of encountering reindeer on the road. These animals often wander onto the roads and can be a hazard, especially after dark. Always drive cautiously and be prepared for unexpected wildlife.
