Summary: Driving in a new country can be daunting. These tips offer insight into what to expect when driving in Dhaka.

1. Chaotic Traffic

Driving in Dhaka can be quite chaotic and stressful, especially for newcomers. The city is notorious for its traffic congestion, with frequent gridlocks and unpredictable driving habits of other road users. It's not uncommon to see vehicles ignoring traffic rules and signals, and pedestrians crossing roads at random points.

2. Hiring a Driver

Many expats and foreigners living in Dhaka prefer to hire a local driver rather than driving themselves. This can be a more convenient and less stressful option, as local drivers are more familiar with the city's traffic conditions and driving culture. Plus, it's relatively affordable to hire a driver in Bangladesh.

3. Car Recommendation

Compact cars are recommended for driving in Dhaka due to the city's narrow and congested roads. However, if you're planning to travel outside the city, an SUV might be a better option due to the country's varying road conditions.

4. Parking Difficulty

Finding parking in Dhaka can be quite difficult, especially in busy areas. While there are some paid parking lots, they are often full, and street parking can be risky due to the city's high rate of vehicle theft.

5. Parking Cost

Parking is not typically expensive in Dhaka, but the cost can vary depending on the location. In more upscale areas, parking fees can be higher.

6. International Driving Permit

Foreigners can drive in Bangladesh with an International Driving Permit (IDP) for up to 90 days. After that, they will need to obtain a local driving license.

7. Obtaining a Local Driving License

To get a local driving license in Bangladesh, you will need to pass a driving test and a written exam on traffic rules and regulations. You will also need to provide certain documents, such as your passport, visa, and medical certificate. It's recommended to contact the Bangladesh Road Transport Authority for the most accurate and up-to-date information.

8. Road Safety

Road safety is a major concern in Bangladesh, with high rates of traffic accidents. It's important to always drive defensively and be aware of your surroundings. Also, always wear your seatbelt and avoid driving at night if possible.
