Summary: Driving in a new country can be daunting. These tips offer insight into what to expect when driving in Burgas.

1. Understanding the Driving Culture

Driving in Burgas, like many parts of Bulgaria, can be a bit challenging for foreigners. The driving culture is different from many Western countries. Drivers can be aggressive and the traffic rules are not always strictly followed. It's important to be alert and cautious while driving.

2. Car Recommendation

As for the type of car, it really depends on your personal preference and needs. However, a compact car is often recommended for city driving as it's easier to maneuver and park. If you plan to explore the countryside or mountainous regions, a 4x4 might be a better option.

3. Parking in Burgas

Finding a parking spot in Burgas can be difficult, especially during the peak tourist season in summer. However, there are several paid parking lots and garages available. The cost of parking is relatively affordable compared to many Western European countries.

4. Driving with an International License

Foreigners can drive in Bulgaria with an international driving permit (IDP) along with their valid national driving license. This is valid for up to one year. After that, you will need to obtain a Bulgarian driving license.

5. Obtaining a Bulgarian Driving License

To get a Bulgarian driving license, you will need to pass a driving test which includes a theory and practical exam. The test can be taken in English. You will also need to provide a medical certificate to prove that you are fit to drive. It's recommended to take a few driving lessons to familiarize yourself with the local driving rules and conditions.

6. Road Conditions

While major roads and highways in Bulgaria are generally in good condition, some secondary roads can be poorly maintained. Be prepared for unexpected road conditions such as potholes and uneven surfaces.

7. Be Aware of the Speed Limits

Speed limits in Bulgaria are strictly enforced. The standard speed limit in urban areas is 50 km/h, outside urban areas it's 90 km/h, and on highways it's 130 km/h. Be sure to always follow the speed limits to avoid fines.

8. Always Carry Required Documents

When driving in Bulgaria, you should always carry your driving license, IDP (if applicable), passport, car registration document, and insurance papers. Police checks are common and you will be asked to show these documents.
